here are my skills. how can i make some green in the spare time. quite obviously mi. [More:]so, i'm a physicist. i have all kinds of quantitative skills. i have all kinds of mechanical, design, and electronics skills. i can pick up heavy things. i can write and edit, technical or not. i live in austin, tx, i can drive anything with four wheels, i have a clean criminal record and i want a good gig for some walking-around-money. i think what i'm having a hard time figuring out is what are some jobs that i can pick up when i have the spare time and put down when i don't -- i have an erratic work schedule that can eat up normally spare blocks of time.

hagame el favor de suggesting a good job! thanks.

I often wish for a person who can lift heavy things and drive them somewhere (...I could give you at least four jobs right now. If you were in Greece. :) ) Do you have a truck? If you had another person you could coordinate with so to trade off when the other was busy, it might be a pretty reliable side thing.

Maybe you could advertise as a "computer cleaner" - go in and clear up the garbage people get on their computers... something like that? Of course, even this is better if you have another one or two people to make sure someone is fairly easily available any time. I had a weird problem with my computer not long ago, and my normal tech guy (mr. taz) was out of town, so we got a recommendation for a good person, and he was here in 15 minutes; I was amazed. He had the problem solved in another 10 minutes, for a really, really reasonable price. I put his name and number in my book in ALL CAPS. UNDERLINED THREETHREETHREE TIMES!!!! :)

I'll keep thinking...

Any chance of putting all that in a "looking for work" ad in your local Austin papers? I don't know how productive it would be but it's certainly a start.

Maybe you could learn to service medical equipment like those giant laser machines that grab your head and burn away part of your eye so you don't have to wear contacts anymore. I bet they need regular calibration.
