08 January 2007

have I mentioned that I'm really sick of weather? [More:]

it isn't enough that we've had 3 snowstorms in a row, and now they're predicting a 4th for Friday (the day my interview's been rescheduled for... go figure). Now we're experiencing 100 mile an hour winds:

..."We've got one drift five feet deep on 63rd Street by the IBM plant," he said. "That road will be closed most likely for the rest of the day."...

Right. that's 1/4 mile from my apartment, yo. Which was literally TREMBLING in the wind last night. It's a 3 storey cinderblock and stone solid building complex, with 50 units. It's not like this is a wood frame house or anything. It's a big frigging building.

The damn wind kept me up all night last night. The roommate too, and now he's cranky. Feh.

I guess the only silver lining is that the resultant downslope winds force a temperature increase of anywhere from 10-40 degrees. Yesterday it was 18 and calm. Today it's in the mid-50s and blustery.

Of course these high winds coupled with drifting snow mean I can't go ride outside anymore now than I could when it was snowing anvils and doorknobs out.

I'm really getting sick of this. If I'm going to be unemployed, I should at least be able to go ride my bike, not trapped inside the apartment for going on 3 weeks now due to weather.

I mean I moved out here because sun, (relative) calm and mid-50s daytime highs are the norm for winter. Yes it's windy in January but usually managebly windy, not hurricane-force windy.
Break out your snowshoes and meet me in Nebraska. I have a friend that lives outside of Lincoln. We could drink hot cocoa and she could draw warm pictures of us.

How was snowshoeing with the BF, anyway?

You know, I'm getting sick of seeing it on the news all the time. It makes me feel guilty for not having snow drifts above my windows and for being able to ride my motorcycle in to work today and for heading out for lunch with my sunglasses and a light fleece pullover on.

I do not miss winter.

Sorry its getting you down. You can always fill your waterpipe up with some fresh powder, that always cheered me up!

I hear ya LFR. Last night it sounded like someone was trying to cut the roof off our building with a buzz saw. ( "What is that noise!? Why are they making it so late at night?" ) Turns out it was large slabs of ice shuddering their way to the edge of the roof. The sound of them falling and hitting the ground at 2am was less funny than you might think. ( "WTF!? Is that breaking glass?" )

You know, I think we could use some "exchange populations" for a while. Wouldn't that be neat? Like I come out where you are and you come and live in hot and smelly NYC. I miss snow and I doubt I'll get to see some this winter, now that my humble ski plans seem to be falling through too. The gods hate me.

This winter is crazy for sure LFR. I have to say, this is one of the first times that Golden hasn't had the winds as bad or worse than other areas. I was at work all last night, and when the wind started it was like someone just threw a switch to turn it on. Hang in there LFR, and tell Aaron to mellow out and get on the trainer. At least there appears to be some serious meltage going on. Oh, and good luck with your interview, dude!

Just keep telling yourself how beautiful the Cottonwoods will be in the spring.

Just keep telling yourself how awesome those summer thunder and lightening storms are going to be.

Just keep telling yourself how gorgeous the foliage will be next fall.

Just keep telling yourself winter is almost over and won't be back for a whole 'nother year.

Just keep telling yourself, once the plow goes by you could go to Bubba's in Westminster for some real good BBQ.

youngergirl: yes, and awesome! Here's a shot of monkey-boy, 10 feet up a (mostly dead) tree during yesterday's 4 hour excursion. On the way down he broke one of the branches and went up to his butt in snow, which prompted a fit of hilarity on my part.

fenriq: Huh? Sorry that just didn't parse dude.

bigblueroom: yeah, I forgot to mention the shattering-glass noises of the big slabs of icicles landing on the concrete sidewalk, which was part of what kept waking us both up. I assume you live in Boulder? One of the kids I coach says his power was out on the Hill for 4 hours last night. Egh. Did you see where they had to close Broadway this morning due to a giant fallen tree up by Mapleton?

carmina: yes, I agree an exchange would be awesome, tho personally I suspect the gods hate me worse. I can't understand why I keep getting interview schedules that exactly correspond to days that we get a foot of snow. Once or twice I could have chalked up to coincidence but this is going on 4 times now...

lfr, the gods love you and they are trying to tell you that you must not take those jobs whose interviews are on a snowy day. Look out for the job that'll interview on a bright sunny day.

That, or I am high on the NY smell.

eek: thanks! Yeah last night the wind just came up out of nowhere. It was calm when I went to bed around 10.30 and then BLAM!! I woke up at 2AM thinking there was a full-scale military strike going on outside my window. How'd the brewery fare?

Aaron *was* on the trainer dude. I think that's honestly what's making him cranky(ier). Something better break for us soon or we're going to kill each other. And we actually *like* one another. I couldn't imagine being trapped in a small apartment for 3 weeks with a roommate I detested.

goml: thanks, I needed that. You're right, of course. Tho I think the roomie and I are going to spring for $.035 wing night up in Longmont tomorrow instead. Yum! greasy wings!

carmina: you're probably right. I just got another call out of the blue from an agency rep for a prime position at yet another biotech, this time a HUGE one, and it's for a position that I both have experience at and the extremely obscure software skills for. Fingers crossed!

I assume you live in Boulder?

I am a Boulder newbie. They told me that any accumulation would last a few hours at most. But they lied.

Did you see where they had to close Broadway this morning due to a giant fallen tree up by Mapleton?

That must have been fun. ( r.i.p. tree :( ) Happily, I am commute-free for a while and thus blissfully unaware of even the little traffic congestion that Boulder manages to summon.

It is nice out just for walking today though.

Sounds like you've got a lot of time on your hands...You know what I would do if I were you?
I'd recreate all the Bowie album covers!

lonefrontrager, I was alluding smoking a little weed and letting all the unhappiness slide off of you. We used to carry a little portable water pipe when we'd go skiing and stuff it full of snow.

I just hope the internets don't go out! That'd be like cabin fever on turbo!

OK... let me say, this is the strangest winter everywhere.
Since our little October surprise we've barely had any snow.
In fact, today's the first day in about a month that it's actually dipped below freezing.

It was 70 hear in PA on Sat. Fucking 70. I was out in a t-shirt. This is not why I live on the East Coast. This is not why I bought a house with a fireplace. I got a really cool hat with earflaps and pom pom strings and kitty ears on top for Christmas and I can't wear it.

I want in on this exchange program thing.

HA! We're still talking about the Bowie covers. Nice.

Yeah, 72 here in Jersey, jrossi, on Saturday, in the 50's Sunday and Monday, then suddenly down to the 40's today, and a high of only 37 tomorrow. Weird. No wonder no one knows how to dress.
