Good news / Bad News [More:]

Good News: I *did* finally figure out how to use the little wireless remote for my Nikon, and since I've nothing better to do, I spent a good hour or so shooting selfportraits. I'm a lousy portrait photographer, but I did get one decent one.

Bad News: More snow. Again. Woo boy, am I sick of snowstorms. This is the second time in 3 weeks I've had to put off a job interview due to the weather. This sucks, and the worst part is the person I'm supposed to interview with is travelling next week.

Those of you on the East Coast going thru unusually warm winter weather... um, yeah. Quite frankly I'd rather be able to go places than have snow.

/me shovels snow in your general direction
I like this one!

Who told you that you were a lousy portait photographer? They lied.
posted by youngergirl44 05 January | 14:15
Thanks goml... you can actually see the tripod/camera in the 'catchlight' reflection of my eyes. And the edges of my contact lenses... sigh.

I'm not getting any younger, that's for sure.

Good News: Enchilada for lunch! It's Friday!

Bad News: The busy time at work has begun. I will be chained to my desk to the next 4-6 weeks.

Good to see you lfr. You're beautiful.
posted by rainbaby 05 January | 14:21
thanks youngergirl. Portrait photography is what I struggle with the most, at any rate. I consider myself more of a 'street photographer'. I don't mind doing candids but my understanding of lighting is really weak.

Oh and everyone, feel free to chime in on the good news / bad news theme - my bad news is almost shouting-thread-worthy but I just can't work up the enthusiasm.

Good news: pretty good annual review, accurate and honest. Hopefully it'll be a very good year - there's loads of opportunity for me to build on the last one.
Bad news: where the hell did this sore throat come from? And so quickly? Started doing sit ups again. Boy, do I know about it.

Bowie? Musical Genius? Sure. And some of his songs fill me with a strange urge to put on fishnets and lipstick and strut around.

But, I've never heard him called 'beautiful,' before.

hellbient: you couldn't have given me a much better compliment, and yeah, I know what you mean. He's been the posterboy for androgyny since the 70s. I've idolised Bowie since I was a young tween. I thought he was ever-so-sexy in Labyrinth!

Up til last year I had very short spiky bleach platinum hair, and the most common 'you look like' comparison was Annie Lennox. Can't complain about being compared to gender-bending British rock personae.

oh and TPS: what flavour enchiladas? YUM! enchiladas!

May I tell you what I really think of the photo I linked? It made me feel as if I was looking at a 1950's print advertisement for something wholesome like Ivory Soap or something like that. Geez, you are gorgeous. Couldn't really tell before because I only ever saw you with a bike helmet and sunglasses on.

Bad News:

gomy - I had the same feeling but couldn't articulate it until I read your last comment!

Good news: I finally finished my year-end performance self-appraisal! woohoo!

Bad news: Um...nothing really bad...it's Friday after all...the best I can muster up is that it's gray and gloomy outside.

Hey, I just thought of a good Photo Friday - imitations of favorite album covers. Eh? Too difficult?
posted by Hellbient 05 January | 15:17
goml: thanks, tho that feeling has a bit to do with the treatment. I did a little softening/blur treatment with the background, dropped the saturation and brightened it a bit to give it a faintly 'high key' / 'soft focus' feel. I guess it translates to a bit of vintage.

thanks phoenix, seriously.

LoriFLA: you have a thousand watt smile - lovely selfportrait!

Come on, you lot need to post more selfportraits. I mean that was one of my goals here :)
posted by lonefrontranger 05 January | 15:17
I have that "Heros" album framed and hanging in my study. Bowie is absolutely beautiful.

I'm sorry you all are in the snow, but I like that you have time to post pics of yourselves - I've seen eekacat and lfr!

So, yes hellbient, I want to see it, and I love the imitations of favorite album covers idea. I am pro-self-portrait!
posted by rainbaby 05 January | 15:23
Those really are excellent portraits.

Good: I woke up late after having a horrible dream taken from the plot of a book I read last night.

Bad: I am on the verge of a mental breakdown and I can't take a holiday break for two more months.

come onnn, you must not talk to girls very often.

I talk to girls all the time. married to one you know. But I never heard Bowie mentioned in that context, although I did once meet a Subway Sandwich Artist who had the faces of 4 different Bowie personas tattooed on her arm.

If I had to pick a man who qualified as 'beautiful,' I'd probably say Chris Cornell maybe or Dave Navarro, but who knows how the human brain is wired for these things. I once red a poll in a heavy metal magazine where the top vote getters for 'male sex symbol' included Lemmy, Paul Stanley and Dee Snider. That's baffling, but hey.

rainbaby: to imitate my favorite album cover, I'd need a few volunteers:

jonmc: I would love to see you and JoeFamous do that cover.

and thank you all but I'm not so much modest, as fortunate and well aware of it. I'm getting damn close to 40 but I've had the benefit of good genetics coupled with a very active lifestyle and no toxic habits. Alcohol, nicotine and sun exposure are the single biggest aging factors and I've studiously avoided the first 2 and been cautious about the third.

LFR - it doesn't have to be perfect - you could probably just do the pose in sepia and it'd come across. But hey, it sounds like you've got the time to get it more accurate, also. Perhaps you could pick whatever album you'd like, hell, re-enact Labyrinth if you like.
Just stop teasing us!

posted by box 05 January | 16:29
danf: absolutely assuming they're newer than, oh, say 1976 or so. Long as they're 'F' mount (I think) they'll mount. The older ones won't meter or autofocus but these are trivialities.

This is one of the biggest selling points of the Nikon bodies. They're backwards compatible for something like going on 30 years now.

Actually, no.

LFR is what we call "The Platonic Ideal of Hotness."

Good news:

I got to see those gorgeous photos of said Platonic Ideal of Hotness, which certainly brightened my day.

I've been on a very even keel lately. No depression. No anxiety. No out-of-control anger. Just a relaxed, easy-going kind of contentment and happiness.

Took an extended break from therapy after three years of going twice a week. So I have more money in my pocket, which I plan to spend on decadent things like contact lenses, new clothing, etc.

Bad News:

Eh, the usual. Same problems as before. I just don't give a shit.
