Food Safety AskMeCha. Whaddya think kids -- should I use the still-sealed cottage cheese in my fridge that has a sell-by date of November 22nd?
Hmmm, not according to this chart. Damn.

I would and wouldn't think twice about it.

Give it a try. Report your findings back.

Well, I have to admit that I've certainly gone past the storage times for other items on this chart.

The important question here is: are you a college student? If yes, you are immune to food poisoning. If you can look at it, sniff it, and touch it without throwing up, it's good.

If you're not a student, you're not hungry, and it cost less than 1% of your monthly wage, you should pass.

double posted so my vote counts twice

No, I'm way the hell older than a college student. I hate to waste it but I see your point. I may try it though . . . .

My advice is throw it away. But that is my blanket advice for all cottage cheese, new or old. It really squicks me out.

I would say open it, and if it's off it'll tell you at once. If it smells ok, it'll probably be ok. I've eaten some ancient dairy stuff in the past, mostly yoghurt, and it's been ok. One sniff and you'll know.

No! NO! NOOOOOO! It's a dairy product! It's more than a month past expiration! Oh my god, don't do it!

I have a morbid fear of vomitting. I take no chances.

"Sell by" is not "expiration" though. jrossi. As much as I agree with the rest of your statement, I think that the shelf life of cottage cheese (gross as it is) is pretty long.

Maybe, Sass. But it's rare for me to eat even day-old leftovers. So my answer to questions like this is always "AAAAAH!!! NOOOO!!!!!" Then I go to the fridge and check all my expiration dates.

And I love cottage cheese. Just had some for lunch today.

That's a nice chart, but yeah, I've gone way past some of those dates especially with frozen foods.

If the container's swollen, toss it. If it's not swollen, open it. If it's not discolored, smells OK, and the texture looks normal, give it a taste. If it doesn't taste off, just remember that I'm not a doctor or nutritionist.

Toss it. Sell by a week beyond the printed date is inedible.

I ended up tossing it.

Everything I touch turns to crap. || It's been an up and down xmas.
