29 December 2006

Photo Friday: Best of 2006. (Interpret theme as broadly and creatively as you like.)

The story is on my blog. The short version--we hiked 6 hours round trip across the trail-less Kilaueau lava fields (the way back was in the pitch-black night) to see the earth being created. The pink umbrella off to the right belongs to noted vulcanologist and astronomer Steve O'Meara, with whom we talked for quite a bit.

This photo of a vanity set I've been working on: a mirror and a fan made of bones.

Rest of the set here.

Best thing that happened to me this year: Getting back into photography seriously and getting involved with Seattle Flickrites. In addition to the artistic stimulus, I've met some folks who I consider friends. This picture sort of sums it up, since it was shot on film, at a Flickr photostroll, and contains two of my new friends. (Click through to the photo, and then click the two links in the description, to see the pictures they took of me.)

It's so hard to pick - y'alls are fantastic!

I just took this one two days ago so I'm still all enamored of it:≡ Click to see image ≡

OMG BUNNY!!

This one isn't the world's greatest image, but it's symbolic. Yes, it is symbolic of y'all: between the bunnies and the blog asheville people, my life has been made immeasurably richer in 2006 by the cyberverse, which is a good thing. This picture, though, also marks a day I took for myself to walk through the botanical gardens on the advice of my therapist and I did a lot of hard thinking and came out the better for it. Somehow or other I think I may have kind of managed to turn my life around for the better this year and this bunny marks the day when I finally began to notice that.

An F4U Corsair taken on film with my Speed Graphic. Something fitting about all that and one of my favorite shots of all time.

Some of the things I liked best about 2006:

I saw a church with skull-and-crossbones on the spires

Absolutely beautiful photos in this thread!

My photos aren't great, but the trip was. London, Spring 2006.

(Sorry, if the second pic looks big, I promise I resized it to 320 x 240.)

A couple of personal bests-of-the-year: that my cat (seen here in a recent picture) made a full recovery from his life-threatening liver-condition…

And that I eventually got back to Wales to see my folks, a couple of months after an abortive trip cancelled at the very last moment because of the abovementioned cat. Here’s a snap of my 92-year-old grandmother, taken during that trip…

I don't have a particular fave in my photostream, besides which I've linked my pics enough on here, I think.

The photo I've linked to below is not mine, nor do I even know the photographer, however it's one of my alltime favourite Boulder photographs, taken just a week ago during the Christmas Blizzard. It sums up so many things about this city that I love: the true spirit of the holidays, the playfulness and indomitable nature of Boulderites in general, and the community's love of being outdoors no matter what.

Christmas shopping... on skis!

the roommate and I did some grocery shopping on snowshoes, but that's not quite as awesome nor so photogenic.

Hey, great thread idea, though I guess it just makes sense. Earlier I finished my "Best of Set" 2006 set. And since that's way more than just one, here are my current two faves.

I love the stories that go with the shots so far, too!

Mr. H, your cat could be BoringPostcards' cat's brother!

Well, that’s unlikely, though who knows they may be related somehow. That picture’s a little misleading in that his fur has yet to grow back to its full length.

I really like the photos I took of trees downed in a rainstorm:

I picked this photo for two reasons. I really, really like the way it turned out and we got Kaylee this Spring. Getting a dog is one of the bestest things we did this year.

LFR, that's an awesome photo, and you're absolutely right about that being the essence of Boulder. Thanks for pointing that out.

I can't really say I have a favorite photo of 2006. This was a transition year for me in photography, and in many other aspects of my life. My photography in many respects is a great metaphor of my life this past year, and I do think my photography has gotten MUCH better. I guess I'll post the following image which might not be my best photograph of the year, but rather represents how lucky I feel to have made some incredible new friends this year, Silver being one of them.
