omg, my perfect cat! But I probably have a snowball's chance in hell of finding one here. I have never heard of this breed, but I took a What Kind of Cat Would You Be? quiz, and my result was Ocicat! So adorable. I want!
I don't think it's broken, btw. I tried picking all my opposite traits to see what it would come up with, and the answer was a Burmese, which is funny because that's what I am thinking of getting - either a Burmese or a Siamese. However, I think they are interested in showing more exotic breeds, and probably only have a few selections.
I used to be cute and spotted, but the doctor gave me some cream for it. (now I'm scary-looking and spotted, but I'll tell you all about that some other day)
By the way, if you're getting a cat, I demand visitation rights, taz. Why go for the pure-breds though? Moggies can be just as cute, are often healthier, and there's thousands of them looking for a good home.
I have no particular interest in a pure-bred in terms of strict bloodlines or anything like that... Aesthetically I sort of prefer certain looks, and practically I don't want a longhaired cat, but the main thing is that so far my experience in Greece has been that cats don't come around wanting to hang out with one, and certainly don't want to take up housekeeping. They'll come close enough to take food if you are sitting at an outdoor table, but don't want to be petted or deal with humans in any way otherwise. This is definitely the case where I live now. We won't get one 'til we move, though, so I'll check things out in Athens, and see if there are rescue organizations or whatever.
Mostly, I'm sort of terrified to get one in many ways after reading all the askme threads about cat problems. I don't/won't have a fortune to spend on vet bills etc., or even the most expensive cat food. Past experience has shown me that I give good psychic experience for kitty (none of my past cats were neurotic or "troubled") and they stay healthy with me, but damn! Reading the internet is scary. I'm a little worried about things like getting a cat who can't overcome his/her early traumas or whatever. Though I did have one (back in the U.S.) who came to me young, starving (literally) and filthy who turned out to be wonderful, delightful, healthy, sweet, sane and long-lived pet.
Heh. I meant to add that my experience here with cats feels like resorting to personal ads for possible love connections. There just don't seem to be any single cats who are interested in me. I'm a good, loving, not unattractive being. Is it my hair? My clothes? Am I too old? Are they just afraid of a smart, independent human?
Don't worry too much about the huge expenses and worries, most kittens do just fine, just a few vaccinations and they're good.
Cat food from tins is significantly better than just giving them some of whatever you're having for my dinner though, in my experience. So do budget for cat food.
I'm slightly worried about how animal shelters are to be represented in that metaphor.
:)
I don't just love my pets... I really love my pets.
Yes, I would give them good food, meant for them. Just, reading most of the askme threads, I get anxious. Most of the stuff that's recommended there is probably not even available here - and everyone makes it seem horrible if you do anything else. And all the nightmarish stories of veterinary expense, etc. It all just makes it feel like ... Pet For Me = Bad Idea. My cats before internet did fine, but now I'm thinking it was a fluke. I really want one, but... eh. Will keep thinking about it.
Most cats do just fine - they're a lot tougher than people give them credit for. Having said that, insurance is your friend and I would say anyone buying a cat should budget for pet insurance. Look out for caveats - mine for example doesn't include dental so we'll probably have to pay a couple of hundred quid for her choppers to be scrubbed in a year or so.
heheh. Definitely different part of the world here. I mean, I'll ask about it... but I'll expect to be totally laughed at. How much does one pay for something like that in the U.S. or U.K.?
The Persian is a relaxed observer. She quietly takes in the details of her surroundings and is happiest in her role as a spectator. The Persian will gladly accept affection, but does not often seek it out. Her loving and patient nature makes her an ideal housemate while her stress-free nature will allow her to make friends with whoever stops by. The Persian's greatest past time is grooming her thick, tangle-prone fur, but it's worth the effort, because she always looks fabulous!
I'm the sort of cat owner that gets a kitten and it lives for 15 years while only going to the vet for neutering (and for one cat a nasty fight wound). Pet insurance? Dental care? Heh.
Of course my cats have always been inside/outside cats free to come and go through their cat door. I haven't had a cat since I moved to the USA.
The Snowshoe is gregarious and talkative. She is always ready for fun and will regularly try to instigate a game. While her strong intellect leads her to try new things, it also causes her to become easily bored when a task is mastered. Variety is truly the spice of life for this kitty! Affectionate with others, eager to interact, the Snowshoe is always the ?belle of the ball?.
I like abyssinians. They look great until they get fat from neutering. Not that neutering/speying is a bad thing; quite the contrary. But cats look better with a little more vim and vigor. And young abyssinians look like little pumas.
I am: The Norwegian Forest Cat is strong and independent. She is reserved with newcomers but blossoms in the company of old friends. Confidently defending what is hers, she does not like strangers in her territory. Her luxurious coat is a lot to handle, and necessity dictates regular upkeep. An amazing athlete, the Norwegian Forest Cat thrives on physical activity, and no leap is too great or prey too quick for her to tackle. This huntress is clearly queen of her domain!
Hugh Janus: I did a term paper in the 7th grade on Abys, did you know that the kink at the end of their tail is rumored to be a genetic trait handed down from Cleopatra's time - She allegedly tied her rings in a knot at the end of the cat's tail when she'd bathe or swim.
Taz, don't let the askme people scare you. I mean, they are just way, way overzealous, and I guess that's good, but in the real world, you can have a happy cat and be a good cat owner and everything will be fine even if you don't decide to spend a Bill Gates sized fortune on special stuff and vet bills and so on and so forth. I'm gonna go to askme hell for this, but you can even let your cat outside and inside and never take it to the vet except for shots and it's OK.
Really. Seriously. It is a cat. Not a child. I think there's a happy cat owning medium around here somewhere that falls halfway between lackadaisical Greece & the overly involved US. And a cat who has the choice of getting some shots & living in a house is going to be a happier, healthier cat than a stray on the street no matter what.
Yeah... I kind of hate to say that my cat who lived to be a kitty methuselah mostly had indoor/outdoor access her whole life - first from our balcony, from which she could still easily manage an escape of she really wanted to, and then (in another apartment) from our kitty door, which led to an enclosed patio, but from which she could still get most anywhere - again, if she had the motivation.
Yet, she was pretty much the healthiest and happiest of creatures. She only ever went to the vet for initial spaying and then regular shots, and a couple of UTIs (both of which happened when I also had UTI, which is kind of strange). And all that was many years ago, when I was a lot more thoughtless and less settled... So it seems that I would make an even better kitty owner now. Right???
(btw, is it any wonder I never finally decided to have kids? Imagine this kind of waffling, but much, much worse, for about 20 years...)
Okay, maybe my opposite answers, but still the kitty I want to adopt... Won't you please come be my sweet pet, dabitch? I promise to add a bit of the green fairy to the kibble occasionally!
Yes, 'pode. I knew that was incorrect as I was frantically typing that on my way out the door - I get sucked in every morning by the bunnies and am always 7 minutes late for work every day. I should just post when I get to work...
