Dan Bryk (from TO, now NC-based) has a
neat Christmas album fully streamable online!. Mostly piano-pop or light indie-pop, a bit in the Ben Folds or Jon Brion mode, but there's one electronica remix. It's a bit darker than your usual Christmas fare, though it doesn't sound that way at first. (One of the songs is about a post-breakup abortion decision.)
Also, the
Bastard Fairies. They have a
free album with some really fun, accessible (and often NSFW) indie pop. (You may have heard of them because of the
video with the 8-year-old that was slagging O'Reilly.) Well, the singer is a Lakota Sioux named Yellow Thunder Woman, and her partner is a former protege of Dave Stewart (yes, that Dave Stewart), and they actually have a documentary about the political treatment of the American Indian, called The Canary Effect. I suspect this is all a sneaky way to get publicity for the doc. (Which I'm not sure I'd like since Ward Churchill is a source and he's a bit of a fraud.) Who cares, though? The music's FREE!
