It's all I can do to keep from scratching out my eyes. [More:]It's one thing to tread the teetering, heart throbbing brink of insanity, but a far worse fate to plunge the long, screaming fall into the dark abyss. The best thing about this, if there is any "upside," is that these are just "concepts," for now, but it might just be further proof that bad ideas never die.
wrong on so many levels. That's like buying a Rolex alarm clock.

Kinda reminds me of those hideous Dodge "hemi" wagons, which remind me of a hearse.

I never did figure out what at "hemi" is, but the advertising makes it very clear that it adds at least an inch to your penis.

I had the same thought, pieisexactlythree. Every time I see one of those, I want to yell out "It's still a station wagon! You're not fooling anyone!"

Well, pie, HEMI engines are the old skool formula for doin' the boot scoot boogie from any stoplight. They are throwbacks to the days of $0.23 / gallon gas, and tires you could afford to light up and throw away every couple of months.

I've loved me some HEMI, but you're right, no self-respecting dog would play with that Dodge, even with a case of pork chops wedged in its wagonny rear end.

I remember those little guys!

I think those Dodge wagons could be made cool in the right hands. I've only seen a few do the right custom work though.

Anyway, don't make fun of the wagon. They need to become cool. A wagon provides the space of an SUV with the superior handling qualities of a car. I'd much rather drive amongst a sea of Dodge Magnums than Chevy Tahoes.

And the new Mustang was lame anyway. At least this makes it more utilitarian.

My wife and I have owned 5 wagons in a row. . .two inherited Fiats, a Subaru, a Camry, then the Saturn we bought new, for the first time.

We have been having this low level fight about the next car, which is year off. Anyway, she does not want a wagon, but something smaller. I say, "well we're Station Wagon People" so just deal with it. End of story. She does not like that answer and has been lobbying for like a Prius or something. . .or a Saturn Vue (go figure). Whenever I feel ornery, I bring up that topic, in that, for her, there is some heat in this argument.

But I can't see myself in anything other than a small station wagon, for the camping, kayaking, travelling, home project, etc etc lifestyle we have.

Here in Michigan, the Magnum makes a pretty hot looking cop car.

The cops I've talked to say they drive like a tank, aren't very comfortable but go like hell when they need it.

Auburn Hills is where Chrysler's tech center is. The city gets the cars for a buck and pay for the cop-car mods. Chrysler gets instant feedback on how the cars perform.

Here's some more Chisler cop car fun. No accounting for taste on the website though.

If only there were some episode of the simpsons I could quote here.

Actually, I rather like wagons, but only the nice, well designed ones. For example, the Audi A4, Subaru Outback, or those new small Volvo wagons.

That middle photo is an Australian car - a Ford Falcon Wagon, which is not the best-looking station wagon by any means, although they are a very nice sedan.

Like danf, we are station wagon people, but I put aside my life-long (and totally irrational) Ford bias because I simply didn't like the look of the Falcons when we bought our current wagon, which is identical to this one, except ours has 17" rims:

The Holden Commodore is probably the best-looking station wagon ever built, in my opinion and is also fairly powerful, handles and stops well and has reasonable fuel economy. If only I could afford to buy the SS version, which is probably along the same thinking as the Mustang wagon. Any station wagon with a 5.7 litre V8, full leather interior and a suspension set-up that is totally performance-oriented will win my heart any day. Here in Australia, we tend to like our wagons on the sporty side:

Even Hyundais come with those now.

Technically, the old mustang wagon photo in the link is a Shooting Brake - namely a wagon made from a coupe, not a saloon. And yes, they can be very cool indeed.

And dammit, dg, when are you Aussies gonna send us more of those cool Holdens? The Monaro that we got as a GTO is pretty bad-ass.
posted by Triode 14 December | 19:15
Damn Triode! That Ferrari 456 GT Estate is the shit!
posted by pieisexactlythree 14 December | 19:22
Yeah, the Monaro was pretty cool and I almost cried when they announced that it was to be discontinued before I got rich enough to be able to buy one. Maybe because I still miss my 1969 HK Monaro (just like this one, but white). Ah, memories.

I have my heart set on a Commodore SS Wagon for our next car, but have yet to take that battle to Her Indoors, who still holds the belief that a car with a V8 engine is always going to guzzle fuel like it was still 30c a litre. It's all about how you drive it, I kepep telling her, but does she listen? No, of course not.

dg: Do you folks get the GM V8s that disable half their cylinders under normal cruising? Perhaps that might appease SWMBO?
posted by Triode 15 December | 01:32
No, Triode, we don't get those (not in GM products, anyway).
