I'll have to take your word for it. On the surface, however, one could easily conclude you posted this to get around the mecha rule of not discussing mefites here that don't post here much. Since you eventually linked to the MeTa thread, everybody knew exactly who you'd enjoy pointing and laughing at.

If the nerds (who I count myself among) over there knew that your goal was not really to better the level at discourse at ask.metafiter, but rather to explicitly make fun of one of their own...well, I don't think the results would be pretty for you. Nerds are kinda sensitive about that kind of thing.

I hope this thread doesn't get noticed over there, both for you and for metachat.

I don't think the goals are mutually exclusive, or that this thread somehow proves that TPS had bad motives for posting the MeTa thread. I often mentally refer to various threads with those kinds of summaries -- I think I most recently described someone's thread as "Whoa, the world is weird, what's up with that?" It's like those books that list the nine possible scenarios that all plots can be boiled down to. General shorthand.

But I actually wanted to post here to say, "fiancee," two Es, for women.

I find the us and them talk a little bizarre considering that people are bemoaning the snarkiness here and then going and snarking over there. Part of it is just a big site/little site difference and part of it is different audiences and different purposes, but the snark and fart patrol over there includes a lot of the people over here.

It's one thing to argue or even snark about opinions. People go to AskMe for help. They may not do what you want with that help, but if you can't offer it without a set of expectations regarding their ability to accept or digest your advice, you're going to have a lot more callouts to write and a lot more people to call stupid. TPS, you participate in and monitor RelationshipFilter vociferously so perhaps that gives you a sense of ownership and entitlement about it, but it's not yours, and it doesn't need you to be its hall monitor.

I wish people who get their jollies this way would stop doing it and stop egging others on when they do it.

Well, I certainly apologise for that - I wasn't really taking things in this thread seriously and never expected TPS to actually post a MeTa thread because she had been egged on here. I am not trying to discount my own part in the mess that happened here today, just explaining. I joke around a lot about things like this, but I never seriously think it is OK to go out of your way to hurt people.

As taz says, this place was never meant to be a place to generate hurt feelings and I feel bad that I played some part in doing that (sorry, boss - please don't cut my pay, coz I have to feed my kids).

Sure, it's possible she posted for the right reasons. All I ask of anyone, including myself, is for an honest self-appraisal. Metaland is at its worst when people are trying to win it. This was probably one of those occassions.

But when the smart, funny and talented people who generally come around these parts sincerely share (and even snark at) the bounty (which in the case of askme is themselves) gathered out in the wilds of the intarwebs, it can also be really incredibly fucking yummy.

Damn straight it's a community. That doesn't mean everyone has to agree with each other, or even get along all the time. It does mean everyone is responsible for what they contribute to the stew pot, and should continually check whether it has gone rancid, preferably before throwing it in.

And if you do realize afterwards that you've added some crap to the stew, an acknowledgement of such does help everyone fish it back out before the farts start wafting about.

FWIW, I am uncomfortable bashing TPS for an uncharacteristic lack of forethought. It has been my experience that she is a rather kind person. I am not going to spend much time going through her posting history to prove/disprove that.

This was rather obviously poor sport, but I am not above being unsympathethic myself on occasion, for humour's sake. It again, rather obviously, is not a good day for the mecha/mefi relationship.

Personally, I have greater issues with some of the other posters, but I will take those up via email, because I am leery of getting nasty in thread. Not that anyone has any obligation to me, but if I want to get it off my chest, I will not do it publicly; if nothing else, I think the way this played out demonstrates how poorly that can go.

TPS, as much as I expect this has been no fun for you, I do think you are a kind person, and any pitchforking should not be aimed your way today.

As someone who is regularly an asshole on mefi, and can count the number of visits to mecha on one hand, I'm pretty disgusted by this.
Someone must really miss the eighth grade.

Mecha's never been my cuppa and that's fine, different strokes, but I never thought it'd be the kind of place where people plan and crow about making vindictive call outs just for malicious shits and giggles.

It's too bad mathowie closed the thread before someone could link to this.

I know that it's not representative of Mecha as a community, but it is going to negatively affect people's opinions of the place. I feel bad for the folks who had nothing to do with it but will be tarred with the same brush as the jerks.

My two cents:

When I first saw this thread, I thought TPS got overexcited and posted here and then made a call out on MeTa. The first is eeky, I agree, the second is fine. MeTa has always been snarkyland, people don't like it, but people tolerate it too. Everything under "etiquette/policy" on MetaTalk is basically "I point my finger to a member and you all laugh".

I agree with taz that we want to make clear cross-posting with MeFi is not kosher but c'mon people lay off TPS already.

Seriously, what is it with this easy listening crap she's been pooping out lately? Just scary bad. I mean she's always been a complete fruitcake with a weird love/hate relationship with her completely batshitinsane fanbase (well I liked her, that should tell you something), I knew that from the first time I read an interview with her. But she made good music. Little Earthquakes is still one of my five favorite albums of all time.

That new overpriced box set of hers has exactly one good song that was not on her first four albums (or the b-sides) and it is a finally-finished song that should have been on the first album. Yuh-huh. I don't get it. Did she finally lose it after seeing one too many fans dressed up as fairies and just decide to fuck with them for the rest of her days?
