I've never read a Crichton book, but I more surprised he's such a bad writer than I am that he's a asshole. The first sentence of the quote's second paragraph is some pretty horrible prose.

Oh Hell. If I had 10p for every time I'd taken some poor sap I didn't really like and eviscerated him/her in my writing...

We should be more concerned with Crichton's awful writing and the fact that he managed to do this with an utter and complete lack of finesse.

Anyone familiar with writer/director Lee Breuer's work with the Mabou Mines theater company in NYC will note that every thing he does contains some similar device involving the critic Frank Rich.

I shall be sure to never read another of his books. Which is fine, because the last few were complete crap. The Danielle Steele of sci-fi (but apparently without the class.)
