Advice needed! At what point do I call poison control? It all started when I decided to brush my teeth. [More:]Immediately afterwards, I noticed a lot of the inside of my mouth is numb and/or swollen - some spots are both! It feels all novacaine-y! Even part of my lip!

It's Arm & Hammer whitening. Ever had this happen to you? Am I going to die? I'm in the house by myself so I have no one to consult.
Never heard of such a thing. Sounds... weird.

It could be produced in the same plant as some of that over-the-counter mouth numbing stuff though. Whatever it is called. I'd be concerned about an allergy or something like that, have you used this stuff before without this effect?

I usually avoid whitening toothpaste because it makes my mouth hurt. But this doesn't hurt...quite the opposite, it numbs. I can't tell if the swelling is going down or not. I rinsed out my mouth a lot.

I don't think it's a serious reaction because my throat/breathing is fine. That would be the sign of a serious reaction. It's just uncomfortable.

I dunno. I have crappy teeth and gums anyway. I have to use sensitive-teeth toothpaste to keep my teeth from aching from my receding gum line in a couple of places. I've been told that a lot of those whitening toothpastes have some junk in them that is really bad for your enamel. Some are abrasive and others just have unsavory ingredients. *shrug*

Yeah, sass. I think you'll be alright. Suckfest, though!

Someday.

I'd call poison control immediately explaining the symptoms and the possible causal agents.

They won't help you much with that whole "how much shoe polish do I need to drink to..." type of scenarios - they're not really into hypotheticals and role-playing.

However, if you can describe a symptom and a possible agent, they can tell you if it's a known allergenic risk versus a recall in your area versus you just being a little... y'know, off.

It isn't this brand of tooofpaste, is it?

Very weird. As it happens, I use that same toothpaste all the time without a problem. I don't think you're quite at the poison control calling point, but I'd discontinue using that toothpaste.

Arm & Hammer Whitening contains peroxide, I think. So it might be a reaction to that.

You might call the 800 number (if there is one) listed on the tube or the box and let them know about your reaction. Do you normally use this brand without a problem? Maybe they have changed the formulation recently.

I used Tom's of Maine cinnamon toothpaste once and promptly got a fat lip that lasted for a day and a half. The cinnamon oil was too highly concentrated for me. When I called the ToM phone center, they sent me a replacement tube of a different flavor and a while bunch of coupons.

Needless to say, I'm ok now...heh.

There wasn't any number on the box, and I've used products with peroxide before to no (or only slight) negative effect. The swelling didn't go down fully until the next morning. Weirdness.
