Ah goddammit. I should be getting ready now for the London MeFi/MeCha meetup, but am paralysed with lethargy/anxiety.

Make me go, bunnies, make me go!
Go, jan, go! Gooooooooooooo, jan! Woooo!

(OK, I'm a sucky cheerleader.)

Honey, haven't you had fun at the other meetups? GO.

Deep calm breathing helps for both lethargy and anxiety, I find.
posted by occhiblu 08 December | 11:56
Also, go for me, 'cause I never, never, ever get to go to meetups.

*heaves huge sigh to make jan feel guilty if she doesn't go*

If you're like me, you freak out a little before events like this, but then always have a wonderful time once you're there. So remember that wonderful time, and go! :)

My cat is staring at me, with that look in her eye of "Why isn't that nice English lady getting ready for her meet-up?" So you have to go so my cat will stop staring at me.

Really. She's starting to freak me out.
posted by occhiblu 08 December | 12:00
Is she freaking you out as bad as that dancing cat yesterday?

I'm at the office, but Twinkie just called me from her cell phone, and she said you really should go to the meetup.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 08 December | 12:04
Yes. Yes she is.

Do it, jan.
Go to Londontown.
Do it for the girls who cannae go to the ball.

Some of us commoners will never make a London season.

TOTAL PET GUILT TRIP FOR ESSEXJAN!!!!!

My dead cat just called. Said "tell jan to go to the meetup. Miau." Exact words, I swear.

This is one of the worst parts about being sober. I always used to think I was the life and soul of the party (in fact I was a total pain in the neck for just about everyone) but when I stopped drinking it was a massive shock to me to find out that I'm really very shy.

Couple the shyness with all the usual female anxieties about being not slim/pretty/girlie, and I just want to take the easy option and have a date with the TV remote instead of going out.

But I will go! I am having a coffee, and a lovely Fuji apple, and when they are done, I will get ready.

Yay! I'm about to leave the office, pop over the road and jump on a train to Charing Cross. I'll see you in a couple of hours. It'll be a good evening if the same people turn up to this one as were at the last one.

Yay essexjan - I'm the same way. My friends invite me out somewhere, and I come up with a bunch of excuses: I won't know anyone, I have nothing to wear, my hair is all greasy, I should clean my kitchen, etc etc. But in the end, I either go and have a grea time or don't go and regret it.

Shy can be good, though. People needs audiences.

And then you can collect everyone's secrets and embarrassing moments, and use them to your advantage when the time is right. Bwah ha ha!

Jan, this is MetaFilter/MetaChat people we're talking about. No need to be intimidated -- they're probably even less social than you. If they can do it, so can you!

*hides in a corner*

(The cat has stopped staring at me, by the way, and started purring. She's very happy you're going.)

OK, I'm getting ready now.

See you in a few hours' time.

I'll tell my cat to cancel her plane tickets from New Zealand to England to carry you to the meetup, Jan.

Go for me! I lamed on going out myself last night and apparently everyone had a really great time and I've gotten like a bunch of emails and phone calls already asking where I was. Now I wish I had gone and feel dumb for being such a shy fruitcake!

Crosbie is joining the chorus of animals imploring you to go. Unless he's just whimpering because he broke into the refrigerator again and ate most of a dozen eggs and all the candied ginger.

Definitely go, Jan, but don't eat raw eggs, and if you want some candied ginger, fine, just don't eat the whole bag.
posted by tangerine 08 December | 13:12
Oh, poor Crosbie.

Yay for going! I would love to go to a meetup, but I'm a new bunny and don't know of any bunnies in Phoenix, and MetaFilter meetups in Phoenix never end up happening. I am so jealous of folks who get to go to meetups.

And, jan, you are one of the bunnies who I would most like to meet and have a conversation with, so while you may be shy, you are also very interesting.

Go! Better than staying in the house and knowing somewhere out there the entire meetup is depressed and sad because you didn't show up. You don't want to be responsible for sad, do you?

I wish I had seen this NPR article before Jan had to leave for the meet-up... Not that she needs it - as she is a simply divine person and a very apt conversationalist.
