03 December 2006

Advent Devotional, Day 3. I realize there hasn't been a lot of interest in the series so far, and I promise that I'll stop mentioning this every day. But the one for December 3 happens to be written by Mrs. Doohickie.
This is a selfish response. Doohickie, please keep mentioning them. I know I'm likely to forget to check them otherwise. People who don't want to read them can scroll past.

I like the three I've read so far. I've always loved Advent, the lead up to Christmas, and the way the story of Mary and Joseph unfolds.

I've struggled in my relationship with a Higher Power since last year, can't get back with God, so anything that prompts me to look at something spiritual instead of other web distractions is very welcome.

I'll echo Jan's comment. I'd really like it if you'd keep mentioning them. This time of year is now virtually 100% commercialism or the insistence of calling it the "holiday season". Whether people believe in some kind of higher power, it's Christmas and the associated story that's (meant to) be celebrated, not how much money people can throw away on presents.

For the record, I'm not sure what I believe in but I do feel it's important for this kind of thing to be available.

Today's devotional is very reminiscent of Chapter 5 of the AA Big Book where it talks about being powerless.

But there is One who has all power - that One is God. May you find Him now!

Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. we asked His protection and care with complete abandon.

(When I first came to AA and heard that part read at each meeting, I honestly thought that the line was "Half measures of ale does nothing")

I'd rather we didn't.

I don't mean to be rude, and I wish Doohickie well in this and other endeavours. But, not here.

Christmas should be something other than commercial BS. I doubt anyone here would disagree, but once we let something like this in, where does it go?

Hugs to Doohickie, but no. Sorry. I'm not up for it.

So don't read it, GeckoDundee. There's plenty of stuff on here that doesn't interest me and nobody forces me to read it.

If the posts are clearly marked as Advent Devotional day X, as today's is, Jan is correct that "People who don't want to read them can scroll past".

I've got no problem with it, because I assume it's a personal expression of spirituality, and not advocating killing all heathens or putting religion in the Constitution. I'm just not going to click on it. People who aren't interested in my atheist posts probably do the same.

Well, at least I know people are reading them....

I realize some people are not into this stuff. Perhaps the management can give me a read as to whether posting a daily link is appropriate, or if I should back off a bit.

For those who are interested, the link I post is for the message board all the devotionals are in, so if you bookmark that and check it every day, you can read each day as I post it.

Alternately, if anyone sends me an email through my profile email address, I'll start a mail list of sorts with the link to the devotionals as a reminder.

I realize this is not within the normal use of this forum, so if taz could give me a thumbs up or down one way or the other, I'll abide by that.

Also, the management over there wasn't too crazy about a separate thread for each day, so you have to scroll down. Feel free to comment over there if you like; discussion is encouraged.

I don't have a problem with it, but maybe you can do it for a few days, then when it seems like the people who are interested are familiarized, just remind them to keep checking on their own, because a month of it would be too much.

I agree with taz - a link to the same place every day is pushing it. Especially a self link. Not that they're frowned upon, but daily self-linking could be seen as testing the hospitality of the admins somewhat.

I'll start a mail list of sorts with the link to the devotionals as a reminder.
I was going to suggest that; great idea. Do you include little chocolate presents? I really like those kinds of advent calendars!

Technology permitting, yes I can do that.

(In other words, when they figure out how to email chocolate.)

Yeah, unlike weretable's football posts, which I can never identify from my RSS reader until I have been bombarded with boring (sorry!) football info by clicking through.
