I'm a dangerous combination of gung-ho and inexperienced when it comes to working on electronics (I once replaced the output tranny and all the caps and wires in a Fender Bassman amp without bothering to check whether the caps were rightside up -- half of 'em were switched and the output stage ran hotter than hell. At work we used to have a centrally controlled (via NorPack) time system ("official" time) with readouts throughout the plant (this is a large place). The readouts were nixie tubes, and I remember when I first started my job and walking past the central controller and thinking how cool the tubes were. There are still spares for the tubes in the shop, and some of the original readouts are still hung up, but are no longer powered up.
