How can I get people out to my Sunday DJ night? [More:]It's in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, not exactly an easy area to get people to on a Sunday night. My wife said free cookie night, but I dunno. She's a big believer in the power of cookies. She's also talking about a yard sale night.
Yard Sale Night = THE HAWT!!!

Keep on doing it, consistently. Make sure you're actually having real fun. Even if people don't show up. Pretend people are showing up, and put all of the polish and care into it that you would if people were showing up in droves - even if they aren't.

Repeat until people show up. It works.

Well-placed fliers help, as does being added to your local events mailing list or calendar. Free cookies might be nice, but focus on the music. Include the participants if possible. Ferret out good DJs from visitors and invite them for guest spots - they'll promote the hell out of themselves and make sure their friends show up. Make friends with newcomers. Get 'em to help set up or break down or something - involve them. Get Tom Sawyer on their ass and paint the fence.

But most importantly: dance like no one is watching.

I remember doing small music or club nights w/ friends and having to wait weeks or months before people would start showing up and then coming back reliably, even though we'd be pulling in some of the best local DJs and live PA talent, and reliably. The place would be jumping with some of the finest, freshest tunes, all ready to go... except there was no one there but the crew.

Which is fine. 'Cause it's not like we need any excuse to set up a sound system and start making delicious noises. If anything it just gave us a space to do just that and enjoy it with very little pressure.

Which brings me back to that point of having fun. People did eventually show up in droves, and I'm pretty sure they're attracted by the genuine enthusiasm and our tangible love of the music.

yeah pink, i thought the yard-sale idea (in the winter!) was a good one. The owner liked it to. I'll keep ya posted.

loq - she also mentioned putting a sign up saying "dance for a free cookie". My immediate response was like yours' - people shouldn't be tricked into dancing, they should dance because of the music. Although it is kind of a chill night, so dancing isn't really the immediate goal. If it happened though, I'd certainly try and work it.

I did all the flyers and lists, half-knowing it wasn't really going to work. But yeah, last night was the first night, filled with regulars, so hopefully a buzz will get around. And I generally don't do anything unless it's fun.

thanks.

You'll be doing it next Sunday?

I'll make it if I can... is it near the G?

Classon stop on the G. Every other Sunday, so the next one's November 5th. Would you like to be on my e-mail list?

Yes, email me (the address in my profile goes straight to my Blackberry). I hope to make it to the very next one. I live right on the G (45th Rd./Court House Square) so it's easy as pie.
