I've no idea how I ended up there, but alt.sex.cthulhu [NSFW and probably not home, either] must be the weirdest newsgroup I've ever seen (FAQ).

I think it's only weird if you've never seen sex spam before, since that seems to be about the only thing posted. Am I missing something?

I almost miss sex spam. I've set up filters on my hotmail to kill anything with any word from a huge list, including virgins, mortgage, xxx, enlargement, etc.

Back in the day, see, all you needed to do to create a newsgroup was the ability to send (or have an administrator friend send) a specially formatted message.

(Today most ISPs /dev/null any creation messages their users send.)

A fair number were created as jokes. It was a badge of USENET culture, though, that once a newsgroup existed it should have a culture ....

Yeah, I made a handful of newsgroups myself. The only one I remember that was serious/did anything was alt.binaries.emulators.nintendo-64

I made several joke alt* newsgroups that I would never admit to. Heh.
