Grilled Cheese Survey→[More:]When you make a grilled cheese sandwich, do you butter the bread or the pan?
Yes, I also only butter the bread. My mom tried to get me to use a toaster oven and not use butter, but man, that just made a really dry, mouth-roof scratching abomination.
Depends on the butter. If hard, put it in a small pan, add sammich. If soft, spray the pan with Pam, spread butter on bread. It's all about maximum butter-to-bread exposure.
I butter the pan, and after I place the bread, I cut a hole in the middle and crack an egg into it. Cook for a moment or two, then flip the bread and egg, and layer the cheese and the top slice of bread. When the egg is cooked, flip again to toast the other piece of bread.
I don't use butter normally, I guess that makes me a communist. What I normally do is slice the cheese then put it all in the toaster oven open. One of my other favorite things to do is take some good sourdough bread, toast it, then slice some nice sharp white cheddar very thin and let the heat of the bread melt it. mmmmmmm
Butter the bread first, best with tub butter. And only on the outside. For fun, I actually bought my daughter a Hello Kitty grilled cheese maker. It's actually not bad!
I like to use Sweet Hawaiian Bread (partly because I like any Web site that tells me I honor its owners with my arrival!) and mild cheddar. Butter in the skillet, sizzled and well browned. Add the bread, both halves of sandwich, and move bread around pan to soak up browned butter. With spatula, flip bread, and add a little more butter, if needed, and move bread around pan again, to soak up butter. Salt browned, crusty tops of bread lightly, add slices of cheddar. Flip one side of sandwich on top of other, weight with smaller skillet for 30 seconds to help cheese melt, flip whole sandwich and weight again for 30 seconds. Remove to plate, cut diagonally, serve with crisp bread and butter pickle chips.
