TotalChatFilter A friend and I were talking the other day about how much marketing affects, or tries to affect, which actors and actresses we find attractive - and how often it backfires. My question is: which heavily lauded Hollywood beauties and/or hunks do you find not attractive at all and which performers are, in your opinion, underrated in terms of looks and charisma?
I am utterly mystified by the attraction to Jennifer Aniston. Whiny and sad-looking. Also, Terri Pratchett: they may be real and they may have been spectacular, but they're attached to a face that's seen better days.

As for underrated, I personally think Alyson Hannigan is the shiznit, but we've covered that ground before.

I am always baffled by the apparent mass delusion that Renee Zellweger is even remotely attractive. "Pinchy McSquint," we call her in the scody household.
posted by scody 03 October | 00:19
I don't think Katie Holmes is very hot at all. She just looks pretty 'average' to me. Hot body of course, but as far as Hollywood celebs go, she rates a big meh.

Oh an Cameron Diaz She is just not hot at all.
posted by delmoi 03 October | 00:26
Oh scody, you just come right over here and hunker down by me. Zellweger is one of the people I had in mind when I wrote this post.

I'll chime in with my underrated picks: Jon Favreau - I think he's dead sexy, fat or thin. Lily Taylor - not only underrated in the looks department (that flinty, wavering voice!) but in the acting department as well. Yeah sure, critics love her but why is she relegated to indie films but everyone and his brother knows who Cameron Dias is (my choice for most overrated Hollywood starlet).
posted by LeeJay 03 October | 00:31
Almost all of them. Stupid, whiny litte air-headed stick figures that they are, they are nowhere near my idea of an attractive woman.
posted by dg 03 October | 00:32
Apologies to the skinny blondes of the world, but they are SO dull to look at. I'm tired of them being foisted off as the pinnacle of attractiveness.

*insert a 'Z' and and a question mark into my previous post* *high-fives delmoi*

Also, I would like to amend my statement naming Diaz as most overrated and substitute Julis Roberts instead.

I don't go for showy women so most "bombshells" don't appeal to me. I used to think that Cameron Diaz looks conveyed wamrth and personality but then I made the mistake of finding out more about her actual personality.

Katie Holmes is pretty hot in terms of Hollywood's version of a "plain girl." She's got a certain approachable brunette warmth... or it might just be a function of the roles I've seen her in. Still. Anyone who would breed with Tom Cruise is instantly way down ugly creek without a paddle, if not over the waterfall.

Drew Barrymore remains hot to me, mostly because she seems to ride out any lurid press she gets and still do cool stuff like taking a hand in producing her films. The American actress who is willing to show her tits in films (or on talkshows, whatever) and yet retains a credible career is a rare, rare thing.

And then there is Jennifer Connelly, who is a "show her tits" kind of actress in all her films but pretends to nothing more, does it well and has had a few memorable roles along the way. I think she's genuinely pretty, in that blue eyes, black hair kind of way.

I've always thought Natalie Portman was very cute. She comes across as an introvert. She's a vegan and "got principles." Seems like an actual person who got caught up in the film industry. Not much of an actress, though. Probably does her job no better than I do mine. We both get away with it.

As mentioned above, I despise Tom Cruise. He should have gone out with the 80s but chose to be their "lowest common denominator" poster boy for another decade, which turned into two. He's obsessed with being all things to all people and just generally appears as vain. Can't stand him. And that's not even to touch the whole Scientology thing.

I adore Jude Law. I just plain find him totally hot. He's got the looks, the height, the Euro accent but the American "flava" all in one package. Can't watch enough of him.

I'd like to lock Elijah Wood up in a cabin a remote snowy area and have all kinds of krazee hot sex with him for weeks at a time while some Scandi kids from the area delivered groceries, firewood, and lube to the place. I'm 90-something percent straight and it takes a rather effeminate guy to get through to me but he does the job. No, I do not find the Hobbit thing sexy.

Brad Pitt honestly does not register as anything positive or negative for me in any way, which makes me feel out of touch with our times and the female sex. *shrugs* Ethan Hawke's pretty skin has a massive shape inside which spells out D U M B when you stand back a ways. Not sexy.

There's something... persnickety seeming about Johnny Depp. I bet he has all kinds of weird sexual pecadillos. Like, he'll only have sex with you until he begins to care about you, at which point intercourse becomes impossible and he wants to be hung upside down from his nipples with his balls bound by a satin kercheif. I hope I am wrong about him.

I really pay little attention to celebrities. They are like "writer candy" to me. They are crafted to convey a lot at face value. I love how my strange brain picks up on their various vibes and imagines whole personalities for them. That imagination is much more fun to me than actually learning what droll dimwits they actually, usually are.

Yeah, Allison is supercute. But most redheads are.

Kate Beckinsale. Mmmmmm.

I like Julia Roberts okay, not as much as I used to though.

Used to like Amber Benson but I saw her a while back on something and she looked like a scarecrow. Oh well.

I love Joey Lauren Adams' voice.

As for overrated... most of them really.
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 03 October | 00:59
Oh.. Natalie Portman, yeah. She was just adorable in a "I wanna pick her up and squish her like a stuffed bunny" way but became rather hot.
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 03 October | 01:02
I always want to get Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts an ice cube for their swollen lips. I feel sorry for people who have to live life looking like they just got backhanded by a bully. But I will say that JR has developed a sense of public humor about her situation as a movie star, that appears healthier than many other people in that position.

But I think that there are any number of more interesting-to-watch women than the A-listers, on movie screens, and beauty is very little of what keeps me watching. Minnie Driver is interesting. Mira Sorvino won an Oscar for "Mighty Aphrodite" and it's really interesting watching her play the hooker with a heart of gold, after watching Julia Roberts in yet another airing of "Pretty Woman." I care about Sorvino's hooker, but I only know I'm supposed to care about Roberts'. And for sheer craft, I like Whoopi Goldberg, though she mainly gets little but crap roles, and has complained of it, often. Still, if somebody has got to tell me I'm gonna die in short while, I'd rather it be Whoopi.

I'd put George Clooney in the slightly under-rated category, because of his courage in making some good films, against studio money advice, in the last couple of years. He put up his own house for the completion bond on "Good Night, and Good Luck" because his own injured back was making it tough to get a bond from the usual sources, and he wanted to make the movie. So that's deserving of some love. And Mel Gibson, whatever you think of his clowning, and his drunken persona and reported anti-Semitism, is still willing to put himself more completely into projects he wants to do, than other people are. And that's what it takes, to push everyone in the movie business, a little bit.

Oh, and I forgot to say, that at 82, Lauren Bacall is still the hottest woman wearing a skirt, and one of Hollywood's classiest dames.

This only applies to a couple of fellas, mostly because I was reading this late at night. In terms of the Damon/Affleck thing... I totally think Damon is smart and therefore HOT. Affleck is a good pal and therefore so-so. Not that they both aren't cute. Same could (I'm ashamed to say) about "Jay" and "Silent Bob" in terms of hot vs smart vs whatever. Of course, Silent Bob would be my HOT choice... Aw crap, y'all... I gotta go to bed now. This is really pretty embarrassing.

Who is blandly pretty? Catherine Zeta-Jones. Denzel Washington. Emmanuelle Béart. Ben Affleck. Reese Witherspoon.

Beautiful she-males? Renee Russo. Orlando Bloom. Jennifer Garner.

Who needs layers of pancake and the best lighting on earth to look vaguely human? Cameron Diaz. Tommy Lee Jones.

And scarabic, thanks for sharing ... so much.

Hot Men
- Steve Buscemi
- Phillip Seymour Hoffman
- George Clooney (he's pretty and smart)
- Johnny Depp
- Will Smith
- Wesley Snipes
- James Belushi (I know, I can't understand this one either)
- Kevin Kline (Oh! Be still my beating heart!!)

Not Hot Men
- Tom Cruise
- Mel Gibson
- Jude Law
- Matt Damon
- Colin Firth

All those guys seem to have 'negative' charisma for me. I look at them and think 'knobhead' automatically. Oh, and Jim Carrey. I want to smash his stupid face in every time I see it.

Hot Women
- Felicity Huffman
- Reece Witherspoon (despite that shovel chin)
- I always thought Anne Archer was beautiful
- Barbara Hershey had the most expressive mouth until she gave herself a trout pout with excessive collagen. Why Barbara, why???

Not Hot Women
- Renee Zellweger. She's. Just. Not.
- Minnie Drive. Moon face.
- Terry Hatcher. Too, too thin.

Can Take 'Em Or Leave 'Em
- Catherine Zeta Jones
- Jennifer Aniston (although she's made some decent movies - The Good Girl, Friends With Money)
- Cameron Diaz

A lot of celebrities just don't register with me. I read the name and I can't put a face to them.
posted by essexjan 03 October | 04:41
Hrm. The two male celebrities I consider hawt are IMO pretty conventionally good looking: Jake Gyllenhaal and Gael Garcia Bernal. YUM! They get a reasonable amount of press for their hotness, so I wouldn't call them underrated.

I don't understand the appeal of Brad Pitt.

Women? I think Lindsay Lohan is gorgeous when she has her natural hair colour and a few extra pounds than Hollywood likes. shut up!

Like many others, I dont get Zellweger or Jennifer Aniston.

I think Ashley Williams is the most stunningly beautiful woman I have ever seen. (I have a TiVo wishlist that records everything she's in.) I'm also pretty much gaga for Jewel Staite (hell, I named my cat Kaylee). And, to throw my name in a 'everyone likes her' hat, Scarlett Johanssen.

Overrated, um, ditto everyone else's. Oh, and I actually think Julia Roberts and Liv Tyler are not only overrated, but actually ugly.

I don't think Katie Holmes is very hot at all. She just looks pretty 'average' to me. Hot body of course, but as far as Hollywood celebs go, she rates a big meh. This is true about Holmes and.... it's her best asset. Her very averageness gives her a certain neutral quality that makes it possible for her to disappear into a part in a way many actors with more distinctive looks can't do. She's the tofu of actors - she can take on any flavour, and adds more to the whole than you realize. I loathe Tom Cruise and can't watch his movies. He has zero redeeming qualities as far as I'm concerned. No talent, not really attractive at all, and he's a tool to boot. I never realized how much I disliked him until he and Kidman split up. I'd never thought much of her before that point, but all of a sudden I thought, "What a talented and interesting actress!" and since then she's become one of the ones I watch. To segue, I like Nicole Kidman. She's beautiful, talented, intelligent, and interesting. Though I do wish she'd put some colour back in her hair and her wardrobe. She's aiming for classical elegance but winds up looking like a scary mannequin. Nicole, honey, your elegance is built right into your bone structure. You couldn't destroy it if you tried. Aim for a more natural look and the result will be far more attractive. And speaking as one glow-in-the-dark redhead to another, YOU NEED COLOUR. Like many other people in this thread, I think Jennifer Aniston is pretty overrated. She was useful in an average sitcom and in run of the mill romcoms, but I'll be surprised if she ever does more than that. If Brad Pitt had merely been dating her rather than married to her for years, I could totally understand him leaving her for Jolie. Aniston is a slice of wonderbread; Jolie is meat. Though I'm just waiting for her to eat Pitt alive and move on. I don't find Pitt to be anything special - he's another slice of wonderbread. I really like Frances McDormand and Toni Collette. With both of them I had the experience of noticing them in a movie, then upon looking them up on IMDB finding out I'd previously seen a number of their movies and thinking, hey, that was her?! They disappear into their parts. Which is probably why they are considered actors instead of movie stars. Jack Nicholson and Harrison Ford are overrated (they have long ceased to be actors and are now movie stars), though I get their appeal and enjoy most of their movies. Most of the actors I like are generally admired/beloved/lusted after, so no point listing them.

Claire Forlani
Helena Bonham Carter

And why does Paris Hilton always appear on Hottest Women lists? She's not pretty at ALL. (I do think Nicky is pretty)

As far as men are concerned, I never got the appeal of Richard Gere or Sean Connery or Burt Reynolds or Tom Selleck or Nick Nolte.

Scarlett Johannsen, Salma Hayek, Kate Winslett, Sara Polley = hotttt.

- Edward Norton: Scary-hot; I am embarrassed to like him.

Hot gals:
- Scarlett Johansson: I really like her. She seems genuine and nice.
- Lucy Liu: The same.

Gals that are not so hot (to me) that I like:
- Cate Blanchett
- Mariska Hargitay
- Angelina Jolie: Agree that she will eat Brad some day. Jon Voight mentioned he called her Jel when she was young and I think that's cute, even though they're estranged.
- Uma Thurman

Ethan Hawke has a giant nose. You never see it in photographs or on camera. Kurt Russell seems like a nice guy. Nice is verrry good.

The wedding photo on my desk at work had Clooney's head superimposed on my husband's body. Such is the depth of my admiration.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman - I would like to keep this man trapped in my bedroom for eight years.

Thora Birch - Lovely and very talented, beyond the whole "I was a precocious child actress" thing.

Christina Ricci - See above.

Jonathan Rhys Myers - hell, I want a piece of the entire cast of Velvet Goldmine, really. Ewan MacGregor, Eddie Izzard...

Jude Law (admittedly not underrated, I just wanted to counter the anti Judeness)- especially when he was a bit younger (like in Gattaca and Talented Mr. Ripley).

Ugly, ugly people:

Melanie Griffith - I always hope her characters in movies will die. They never seem to.

Catherine Zeta-Jones - ugggh. She has no talent or appeal, IMO.

Kate Hudson - Unless you have a fetish for the whole "6 toes" thing. People raved about her in Almost Famous when all she did was make cutesy faces, not act.

Hillary Duff - she sucks so hard. I just pray she goes to jail for molesting babies while on PCP so we stop having to watch her and her crap movies and her hideous sister.

Tom Cruise - my Cruise film ban has been effect on anything pre- Eyes Wide Shut for quite some time.

Other awfuls - Anyone who looks like a zombie - Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, the Olsens, that skeleton lady from Grey's Anatomy.

Not hot in the least bit:

John Corbett. From his "Nortern Exposure" days.
Will Smith. He just LOOKS like a great guy, and that smile does me in.
Michael Vartan. Everything about him.
Morgan Freeman. I can't explain it. But he's very underrated.
Matthew McConahy (or however you spell it). Very easy on the eyes.
Hugh Jackman. Also easy on the eyes.

Women I admire:

Cate Blanchette. A variable actress, very talented IMHO.
Shirley MacClain (?). I've always loved her. I think she's great.
Susan Sarandon
There are a few others, but I'm drawing a blank.

Usless in my eyes:

Tom Cruise. Needs no explanation.

I tend find "average" guy hot: Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Spacey, David Strathairn, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman, George Clooney, Kevin "Silent Bob" Smith, Alan Rickman, Sean Bean, Gerard Butler, Andy Garcia. Pretty men tend to leave me cold. Except for Oded Fehr - ooooo, babeee! Will Smith is hot too, but he seems too much like a "best buddy" rather than someone I'd sleep with. Joaquin Phoenix is also hot, but odd.

Hot women: Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver, Jodie Foster, Drew Barrymore, Janeane Garofalo, Michelle Pfieffer, Tilda Swinton, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sofia Coppola (although she's moved to directing, thank the gods), Scarlett Johanson and I'd leave the mister if Angelina Jolie ever crooked her little finger at me. *swoon*
