Vegas, baby. Vegas. So, I'm planning on going to Jonmc and Pip's nuptials. Just put in for a couple of vacation days (preparation and recovery time, respectively). Am researching flight/hotel room packages and thinking "sparkly outfit". And wondering... whom shall I see there besides the happy couple?
Me!!

Here is a list of attendees.

and thinking "sparkly outfit"

Everybody's doing the sequin thing. The bride and groom are going to be the least sparkly folks there. I'll just tell everyone you're our backup singers.

I added you to the list, OrangeSwan!

Oops, if I had seen the wiki thing first I would have just posted there rather than calling attention to myself with a thread;-)

Is this going to be THE archetypal Metafilter wedding, or what?

FYI, I fixed your entry in the Wiki, Orange Swan. All pretty now.

Also, I am eating the world's smelliest sandwich for lunch: kosher salami, limburger spread, sharp cheddar spread, banana peppers, Nance's sharp & creamy mustard on a toasted onion roll. accompanied by Doritos Black Pepper Jack chips, a banana, peach applesauce, a Virgil's Root Beer, and some Dulce De Leche Oreos.

When we brown-bag it, we don't fuck around.

sharp cheddar shreds, dammit. don't wanna overdo it on the spreadables.
posted by jonmc 14 September | 11:46
I read that as "the world's smallest sandwich" and was trying to figure out how on earth you got all that into a teeny tiny sandwich.

first rule is: the laws of Germany
second rule is: be nice to Mommy
third rule is: Don't talk to Commies
fourth rule is: eat kosher salami...

I'm tempted to fly in for an hour just to see the nuptials... very tempted.

Do it, getoffmylawn. DO IT.

I'm about to buy a house, so this isn't perhaps the most prudent move on my part, but screw prudence. This is a one time event. Promising myself a trip to New York for a meetup sometime later "when I can afford it" just doesn't cut it.

assuming prudence is into it.

I knew someone was going to make that joke. Just knew it with every fibre of my being.

Round trip/air only is only about $162.00. There are lots of last minute specials on travelocity including hotel for just under $300.00. Anyone still looking to share a room? I don't think I snore, but I have been told I grind my teeth when I am stressed out.
posted by getoffmylawn 14 September | 12:47
SassHat had been thinking about it- might want to drop her an e-mail.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 14 September | 12:51
You should definitely stay at the Barbary Coast, Orange Swan! The more the merrier!

getoffmylawn, if you can't get someone like SassHat to go and share a room with you, then depending upon how long you're staying and stuff you might be able to stay in me and my friend's room. We're both male, one straight (me) and one gay (him). It's two double beds. I haven't run this by him, but I don't think he'd mind, especially if it was just one or two nights and not all four, and especially if you could pay something. This offer is open to anyone else who might be just on the edge of going buy money for a hotel room is a problem.

I've been meaning to post about Vegas for a few things. First, should we exchange some contact information via email or something? I'm okay with posting my cell phone number to the wiki. Second, we've got the wedding the the "reception" at Harrah's afterwards, which I guess is sort of the official meetup party, but when else might we get together, and doing what? I'm not going to Vegas for Vegas, I'm going for the meetup, so I'm particularly keen on meetup activities.

Finally, has anyone been thinking about shout-outs and an interesting and fun way to do them? I've been thinking about this for weeks and not thought of anything (practical).

We're going to indoor skydiving, probably first thing in the morning (10 a.m.) on one the days (Sunday, maybe? Who knows!). Anyone is welcome to join!

I don't think we're going to make too many set in stone plans before we get there; mostly play it by ear.

I, for one, want to spend lots of time by the pool at MGM; anyone who wants to sneak in on my key is welcome.

I'm going to try to stay at the Barbary Coast, kmellis.

I've never been to Vegas, so I would actually like to see some of it while I'm there. I'm not at all interested in gambling though, nor in strippers, nor in drinking (much), so that does narrow it down a little;-)
posted by Orange Swan 14 September | 14:24
Opps, here's the real link for indoor skydiving!

I wanted to wear my suit, but I looked at the temperature in Vegas, and remembered that my suit's wool, and I'd last about a minute in that heat. So I'm looking for something with class and a bit o' cheese - time to hit the thrift stores. Elizard was going to wear her corset, but she'd probably last about a minute longer than I would, so I think she's going for gold lamé.

What's the nighttime temperature outside in Las Vegas? Remember, the wedding is at 9:30 p.m.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 14 September | 16:21
According to the weather report, it's supposed to drop from 33C/92F all the way to 22C/73F. Scaaary. Well, as compared to what it is in Vancouver right now - 13C/55F. And cloudy. It'll be hot for me!

Well, Chastity is obviously out of the question, you gotta do more than Hope, and you hate to depend on Charity alone.
posted by Wolfdog 14 September | 16:37
OrangeSwan, I'm not much into gambling and not at all into drinking or strippers, I'll probably have a bit of silly money on the slots, but that's about it. I have George's two sister's coming in, one just for a couple of days (she'll miss the wedding) and the other for almost the whole time.

Not sure what the plans are for sightseeing, but there's a ton of things to do there, after you've spent a while wandering round, open-mouthed, astonished at both the hotels and (some of) the people.

Hooray, Orange Swan! This just keeps gettin' better and better!

"What's the nighttime temperature outside in Las Vegas?"

The temperature drops about 10 degrees from the day's high as the sun goes down, then levels out until sometime after midnight, and then it drops fairly fast.

Bring sunglasses! Not just for the sun, but also for the wind-blown sand.

(If anyone feels that any of this info is wikiable, feel welcome to post it there.)

I am so glad I had the sense to look up Vegas's average temperatures for September. It never occurred to me that hello, it's in a desert, and I would have shown up in velvet with a leather jacket.

I might not be able to do the sparkly outfit thing, though. There's no buying summer clothes in Toronto in September, so unless I make something or buy it in a thrift store, you're stuck with me showing up in a basic summer dress.

Are you a "definite" for going, Orange Swan?
posted by kmellis 15 September | 11:51
I am now. I booked my flight and hotel package last Saturday night. AND I bought snazzy new sunglasses on Sunday.
