"Nobody changes anyone's mind anymore. People strain facts through their own ideology and ignore that which is happening before their eyes. Alive in this millennium, Orwell would be embarrassed for having so grossly understated his case."

A really interesting Q&A with David Simon, creator of The Wire, before the start of the current 4th season.
We don't have HBO, but that show sounds really intriguing. (matildaben even recommended it to me while she was here last month.) I liked that interview, too.

Yeah, we don't have HBO either - we just get the dvds. The Wire though, is hands-down one of the best shows on television, ever. If you thought Homicide: LOTS was good, be prepared to be blown away.

dingdingding! Thank you sir.

Simon also created the immortal Homicide and my man Richard Price has written for The Wire on occasion.

Oh, I have to check this out, then... I loved Homicide.

It's the best show on television.

(George Pelecanos also writes for The Wire, and his The Night Gardener is one of this year's best novels.)

The Wire even has a Tom Waits song for its theme. That show is truly awesome. And the season-premiere on Sunday was very good.

We just get the DVDs as well, but it is such a great show I'd consider getting HBO just for it.* (The first season is hands down the best 360 degree portrayal of the "war on drugs" I've seen on TV ). Thanks for the link gaspode.

*My only beef being the cheesy love/sex scenes.

Oddly enough this reminds me to say that I just finished the first season of The Shield on DVD which AlexReynolds recommended in a thread of if you like X you might like Y (Wire/Cop shows). Not the same kind of enjoyment as the Wire, but thanks Alex (wherever you are)! Although, I am curious: does the Shield tone it down in the second season or rachet it up?

Thanks! Beautiful quote. I'm going to use it everytime I try to explain to someone why you need to use votes and pressure, not logic or morality, to change politics.

or propoganda. or softsoap. or humor. or appealing to base instincts. whatever works, babe. nobody ever said politics was pretty.
