New friend. So, I've finally plucked the courage up to point friends towards metachat. And one of them has joined. I have questions though. [More:] How do I make them feel welcome? How do I introduce them softly to the greatness that is The Metachat? how do I cope when they make n00b mistakes? :-) What's the best strategy for getting them involved? & a/b - welcome. hopefully, you'll say hello.
(There's this great picture of a pink bunny on a hillside in italy that would probably make a great first post for your friend!)

Hi Sean and anybody else who may or may not be interested in the newbie. Hope I don't make too many mistakes-although I'm sure you'll point them out to me Sean (e.g.use correct spelling and NO APITALS you're not !$ :))

Of course.

Serious questions b.t.w. I really want to know.
How do I explain / ease the transition?

Why don't you just not stress over it so much, Seanyboy? Mats jumped me in and there was no such tension. Just come on in and enjoy it. IRC is probably the quickest and funnest way to get to know people here.

If anything, getting all spooked about the do's and don'ts of this channel is the first way to alienate anyone who's new.

Welcome, welcome!

What? (looks round) are you asking me? or everybody else?
posted by angiebabes 03 September | 15:06
Why, thank you LT. My sentiments entirely. I don't feel alienated anymore.

Damn! I just wrote a long answer to this and then closed the page before posting!

I'm too lazy to reconstruct, so I'll just say, "Welcome, angiebabes; we're easy!" If there's anything you don't understand, just ask - anybunny will be pleased to help.

The best thing about Metachat is that it is really just a place for people to relax and be playful, though we do sometimes enter into more serious discussions or talk about more painful things, and there really isn't a lot of emphasize on form and norms, so you don't need to worry much about making a misstep.

I'm just extra-pleased to have another European on board - we need to lively up mornings in our time zones after the North American bunnies are tucked into their beds.

Thanks everybody! Taz, SassHat,essexjan, I'm a little overwhelmed. By the way what's with the picture of the dead bunny?

re: Dead bunny. In jokes for bunnies.
Start Here!
Do not pass go. Do not collect any cilantro.

There's some info about it on the Wiki, though the examples cited have increased, probably fourfold... or more.

Basically, the story about a giant pink bunny created as an art installation (in Itally! On a hillside!) was posted here, then people kept coming in and posting it again - sometimes on the same day, not realizing it had already been posted; soon enough, it became the überjoke around these parts.

Mmmm maybe I'll move to Colletto Fava if I can't find a house. And thanks for the update on cilantro Sean (i thought it sounded like some weird sexual practice).
posted by angiebabes 03 September | 15:49
Hi redvixen. Gosh it's getting busy round here!

A couple of my friends joined after Bunnystock - hi recoveringiowan! hi syntax! - and at first I was all worried about it. I still feel proprietarial, like, I get needlessly upset on syntax's behalf when not enough people respond to his (fabulous) posts, but then I finally got over myself, realized that they're both grownups, fully capable of taking care of themselves and hell, I'm glad they're here and I hope they're having fun. So welcome angiebabes, belated welcome to all the other n0obs, and it's all good.

Welcome, angiebabes; we're easy ...
But we're not cheap, so don't get any ideas.

Well, actually, I'm cheap, but not the others.

Well, not many of them anyway.

How much are you, 'zactly? I'm looking for spare change under my sofa cushions right now!

Hi angiebabes...welcome. And let me be the very first to wish you a Merry Christmas!

Thank you one and all for the fabulous welcome I've had here. Sean was right: it really is the coolest place to hang out.
Have to go to bed now as it's nearly time to get up!

I'm very, very new. This seems the place to be when everything else on the internet is dead.

Creative omission gets us: Metachat - Everything else on the internet is dead. I like it! We're ready to rumble. Oh, and welcome all. I'm not around much.
