Quick, painless and creepily accurate 2 question Enneagram test. [More:] Be sure to check out the really interesting wiki page.

I am a "#4".
you chose AY - your Enneagram type is EIGHT.

"I must be strong"

Asserters are direct, self-reliant, self-confident, and protective.

How to Get Along with Me

Stand up for yourself... and me.
Be confident, strong, and direct.
Don't gossip about me or betray my trust.
Be vulnerable and share your feelings. See and acknowledge my tender, vulnerable side.
Give me space to be alone.
Acknowledge the contributions I make, but don't flatter me.
I often speak in an assertive way. Don't automatically assume it's a personal attack.
When I scream, curse, and stomp around, try to remember that's just the way I am.
What I Like About Being a Eight

being independent and self-reliant
being able to take charge and meet challenges head on
being courageous, straightforward, and honest
getting all the enjoyment I can out of life
supporting, empowering, and protecting those close to me
upholding just causes
What's Hard About Being a Eight

overwhelming people with my bluntness; scaring them away when I don't intend to
being restless and impatient with others' incompetence
sticking my neck out for people and receiving no appreciation for it
never forgetting injuries or injustices
putting too much pressure on myself
getting high blood pressure when people don't obey the rules or when things don't go right
Eights as Children Often

are independent; have an inner strength and a fighting spirit
are sometimes loners
seize control so they won't be controlled
fugure out others' weaknesses
attack verbally or physically when provoked
take charge in the family because they perceive themselves as the strongest, or grow up in difficult or abusive surroundings
Eights as Parents

are often loyal, caring, involved, and devoted
are sometimes overprotective
can be demanding, controlling, and rigid

Interesting! I'm a 9.

you chose BX - your Enneagram type is NINE.

"I am at peace"

How to Get Along with Me

* If you want me to do something, how you ask is important. I especially don't like expectations or pressure.
* I like to listen and to be of service, but don't take advantage of this.
* Listen until I finish speaking, even though I meander a bit.
* Give me time to finish things and make decisions. It's OK to nudge me gently and nonjudgmentally.

* Tell me when you like how I look. I'm not averse to flattery.
* Hug me, show physical affection. It opens me up to my feelings.

A lot of those statements are very generic and apply to everybody. Under "what's hard," mine said something like, "longing for things I don't have." Well, what else can I long for, fer cryin' out loud?

Yeah, I got a 9 as well.

*high-fives BP, peacefully*

Each question I had objections to some part of the answer I chose. Ultimately, the fit for the results is questionable, but here it is.....

the Achiever: your Enneagram type is THREE.

"I need to succeed"

Achievers are energetic, optimistic, self-assured, and goal oriented.

How to Get Along with Me

* Leave me alone when I am doing my work.
* Give me honest, but not unduly critical or judgmental, feedback.
* Help me keep my environment harmonious and peaceful.
* Don't burden me with negative emotions.
* Tell me you like being around me.
* Tell me when you're proud of me or my accomplishments.

What I Like About Being a Three

* being optimistic, friendly, and upbeat
* providing well for my family
* being able to recover quickly from setbacks and to charge ahead to the next challenge
* staying informed, knowing what's going on
* being competent and able to get things to work efficiently
* being able to motivate people

What's Hard About Being a Three

* the fear on not being -- or of not being seen as -- successful
* comparing myself to people who do things better
* struggling to hang on to my success
* putting on facades in order to impress people
* always being "on." It's exhausting.

Threes as Children Often

* work hard to receive appreciation for their accomplishments
* are well liked by other children and by adults
* are among the most capable and responsible children in their class or school
* are active in school government and clubs or are quietly busy working on their own projects

i was a six, therefore "affectionate and skeptical" responsible, trustworthy and anything from reserved and timid to outspoken and confrontational.

(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

It's, um, creepily insightful how you give it two full paragraphs of sentences describing yourself and it gives them back to you in the form of a list.

A few years ago I did a very detailed Enneagram test which took hours and which showed me as a 9. This one took 30 seconds, and, again, a 9.

Hey, Wolfdog - I'm a Seven! Don't harsh my adventure!

Adventurer (Seven)

"I am happy and open to new things"

Adventurers are energetic, lively, and optimistic. They want to contribute to the world.

How to Get Along with Me

* Give me companionship, affection, and freedom.
* Engage with me in stimulating conversation and laughter.
* Appreciate my grand visions and listen to my stories.
* Don't try to change my style. Accept me the way I am.
* Be responsible for youself. I dislike clingy or needy people.
* Don't tell me what to do.

What I Like About Being a Seven

* being optimistic and not letting life's troubles get me down
* being spontaneous and free-spirited
* being outspoken and outrageous. It's part of the fun.
* being generous and trying to make the world a better place
* having the guts to take risks and to try exciting adventures
* having such varied interests and abilities

What's Hard About Being a Seven

* not having enough time to do all the things I want
* not completing things I start
* not being able to profit from the benefits that come from specializing; not making a commitment to a career
* having a tendency to be ungrounded; getting lost in plans or fantasies
* feeling confined when I'm in a one-to-one relationship

Sevens as Children Often

* are action oriented and adventuresome
* drum up excitement
* prefer being with other children to being alone
* finesse their way around adults
* dream of the freedom they'll have when they grow up

Sevens as Parents

* are often enthusiastic and generous
* want their children to be exposed to many adventures in life
* may be too busy with their own activities to be attentive

Good thing I don't have kids; I'd enthusiastically expose them to adventure and then leave them alone.

Wolfdog, heh.

I also got 7, which did not seem to fit at all, and then I read a bunch of the others, and they didn't seem to fit at all, either.

I generally like these sorts of tests, but I have just never been able to get into Enneagrams.
posted by occhiblu 31 August | 13:44
Hmmm. I came out an 8, like jonmc, but had I been given the 7 description that taz got I would have felt it was equally accurate.

Am I the only Five?

"I need to understand the world"

Observers have a need for knowledge and are introverted, curious, analytical, and insightful.

How to Get Along with Me

* Be independent, not clingy.
* Speak in a straightforward and brief manner.
* I need time alone to process my feelings and thoughts.
* Remember that If I seem aloof, distant, or arrogant, it may be that I am feeling uncomfortable.
* Make me feel welcome, but not too intensely, or I might doubt your sincerity.
* If I become irritated when I have to repeat things, it may be because it was such an effort to get my thoughts out in the first place.
* don't come on like a bulldozer.
* Help me to avoid my pet peeves: big parties, other people's loud music, overdone emotions, and intrusions on my privacy.

What I Like About Being a Five

* standing back and viewing life objectively
* coming to a thorough understanding; perceiving causes and effects
* my sense of integrity: doing what I think is right and not being influenced by social pressure
* not being caught up in material possessions and status
* being calm in a crisis

What's Hard About Being a Five

* being slow to put my knowledge and insights out in the world
* feeling bad when I act defensive or like a know-it-all
* being pressured to be with people when I don't want to be
* watching others with better social skills, but less intelligence or technical skill, do better professionally

yikes, some famous Fives: Theodore Kaczynski, Friedrich Nietszche, Vincent Van Gogh, Kurt Cobain

but also: Jane Goodall, Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka, Stanley Kubrick, John Lennon, David Lynch

I was just about to say the same thing, occhi! Something about the enneagram rubs me the wrong way. In part, I dislike it because it's not a simple classification system; it gets baroque. I'm sure a lot of people would argue that's why it's great, because it isn't oversimplified - but for me the only useful thing about personality inventories is that they DO oversimplify. They just give kind a stark framework that expresses general tendencies, and then all our individual quirkinesses can fit into the gaps.

I mean, if you want complicated, we have our real personalities.
posted by Miko 31 August | 13:51
Oh, even worse, "famous fives". As if Charles Darwin took this test.

posted by Miko 31 August | 13:54
Heh.

And I just took a slightly longer free version, and tied between 1 "The Reformer" and 9 "The Peacemaker" at 6 points each, with *every* *other* *category* getting 3 or 4 points. Which would seem to indicate rather a lack of preferences on the things they're testing for.

Who knew I was so balanced? :-)
posted by occhiblu 31 August | 13:55
Though that other site seems to suggest I'm a 1, who when stressed turns into a grumpy hedonistic 4, but should strive to become a fun-loving 7. So I guess the upshot is that I should try to be more like taz. Which is not a bad goal.
posted by occhiblu 31 August | 14:05
I am a Two (CX). "I must help others."

Which is true, but I wonder if it would've given me the same result if I had a fourth option for the first question. Options A and C both appealed to me: When I switched from C to A I became a Seven, which seemed just as accurate as the description for Two, although a bit more extroverted. Maybe I'm a Two-Seven split personality?

Am I the only Five?

Nope. I also apparently "need to understand the world."

jonmc and I are both 8's. Does this mean I'm having jalapenos and chili chocolate malt ale for dinner or that he will be wearing white chuck taylor high tops and a hawaiiaan shirt to a wedding? ;)

Four: Romantic
Five: Observe
Six: Loyalist
Seven: Enthusiast
Eight: Leader
Nine: Mediator

Tried occhi's other site, and got seven again (with 7 points), with the other high ones (all 5 points), two (the helper), three (the achiever) and five (the investigator).
posted by taz 31 August | 14:31
I'm a six. It did seem creepily accurate, especially the part about childhood, but ah well, the little cartoon said I'm too trusting & don't count my change, and that's true too, so I'm no doubt over trusting the test.
posted by mygothlaundry 31 August | 14:59
I, too, am an Observer, at least according to the two-question test.
posted by box 31 August | 15:00
I'm coming out as a seven (Adventurer) in both tests, with five (Investigator) a close second in the longer test. Which seems wildly improbable at the moment, but then I'm short of sleep, and that always leaves me feeling detached and indifferent.
posted by tangerine 31 August | 15:27
I am also a 9.

Four here. That was fun. It did seem rather accurate.

I went and read the Wiki site on my personality (4, the romantic), and it was so on the mark, that I'm frightened. The funny thing about the type four is that, they have a category telling you that you don't want to be categorised!
