I saw an old friend's picture in Interview magazine last night. Someone I haven't seen in years. Apparently she's a video artist in NYC these days. That was kinda weird. Have you stumbled across anyone unexpectedly recently?
Oh, here's her site.

I run into people who went to my high school in NYC all the time. That's not entirely surprising, seeing as how it was an arts high school, but it's still weird to have a moment of, Boy, that boy looks like that artist kid Danny I went to high school with. Wait, that IS Danny!

I saw the name of someone I was at school with in the media a year or so ago. Thought "it can't be her". It was.

I turned on the local news here in Maine one night, and the person doing the weather turned out to be the daughter of my piano teacher back in VA.

Someone I used to work for when I was in college was interviewed on Fresh Air with Terri Gross. I turned on the radio about 1/3 into the interview and thought "wow, this is what the lab I was working at would be doing now". Then at the end Terri thanked her by name and identified her again, and I went "WHOAH, it IS!!"

I guess it's not that often that geeky science stuff is so interesting to be on Fresh Air, but it was forensics, and that's so popular right now.

This happens to me a lot, actually. Fresh Air especially -- I know (er, knew) a lot of journo types in Austin who are fairly popular right now because they've covered Bush and Enron for so long. And the Texas Monthly link that someone posted on Metafilter earlier this week, the one about Charles Whitman, I knew three people interviewed.

Of course, a year or so ago, it was my name that people were coming across. So it all comes full circle.

Years ago, I was watching "America's Most Wanted" when I noticed the commentator who was leading a segment. I went to school with her, we were in the same class. Right now her name eludes me-I tried to Google what I think is her name, but I came up blank. At our reunion two years ago, she was there with her husband, and as far as I know she's an anchorwoman in Illinois or somewhere. That was kind of neat. We were never friends, but she was never mean to me, either.

High school was kind of rough. Heck, grade school had been worse.

I got emails this week, 3 of 'em, all from exes I dated in 2001-2002. I hadn't heard from any of them since then, they don't know each other, and each contacted me out of the blue. I was kinda weirded out at the coincidence.

Yeah, amberglow, Glenda and I were good friends for a while. After I left school (and home) she and her boyfriend, Steve, (who she's still with) visited me in London a few times and I stayed with them in Blackpool. I remember her and Steve spending, literally, a whole day choosing clothes to go out in that night, from about 10 o'clock in the morning, trying on different outfits, until eventually they were happy with what they were going to wear that night. We went to a club. Stayed 10 minutes. Glenda could never understand my non-interest in fashion and I couldn't fathom her obsession with it.

I lent her my little portable Olivetti typewriter and never got it back. So maybe I am responsible for her becoming a journalist. (Ego? Moi?)

She was always very, very focussed on what she wanted in life and, whilst not having any great skills herself, was always able to get other people to do things for her, which I suppose is why she's a good editor.
