People who don't have an online life might find it hard to understand how I can be friends with people I've never met. It's a strange kind of thing, isn't it?

There aren't many people in the UK I could call on the phone at 4am and have a good old whinge to, but people in other time zones are there in a different way - it's sort of a burdenless form of support. You can read, or not read my words, delete them if you like, reply if you like, give me feedback, advice, cheer me up, or just think 'meh' and close the window.

I know in the past I've been able to offer help and support to people online that I might well hesitate about doing in real life in case it crossed a personal boundary. You know, "I don't know this person very well and this is too much"

I'm not explaining this very well, but anyway, big thanks to the guys in IRC last night, you know who you are.
