Deleted AskMe: What weird food combinations do you love? [More:]A good thread got cut short, so let's bring it over here.

I'll go first! I guess it's not too weird, but I love any sort of fruit relish/chutney with meat. Also, I'll eat avocado with anything.
balsamic vinegar and vanilla ice cream.
peanut butter and bacon and banana.
french fries and apple pie.

Two snacks that disgusted me at first glance but are delish:

Sweet pickle wrapped in cream cheese and salami

Cream cheese, jalapeno jelly and crushed pineapple on a cracker.

peanut butter and peach sandwiches

orange sections dipped in cayenne or chili powder

I made this for someones' bridal shower, and it was a big hit: premade meatballs (hey, I was short on time) chili sauce (16 oz. bottle) and a 16 oz. jar of grape jelly. Put it all in a crock pot and warm it up. Sweet!
Whenever I tell someone the main ingredients are chili sauce and grape jelly, they look at me funny-until they taste it.

vanilla ice cream drizzled with muscat dessert wine, and topped with blueberries or raisins (i.e. sultanas, if you must)

pizza topped with bacon, almonds and onions.

grilled cheese sandwich with maple sirup drizzled on top

my x ate fried twinkies and lived to tell about it.

Strawberries with lemon juice and black pepper. You have to have both the juice and the pepper, it doesn't work if you use just one.

Snacky Apple-Onion-Cheese sandwich for hot desert picnics:

Tangy bread, pref. real sourdough rolls.
Tart/tangy apple slices. Granny Smith, Pippins, Fujis.
*Raw* onion slices or slivers - red, white, or sweet.
Slabs o' tangy sharp cheddar. Or Brie. Or almost any tangy cheese.
Spicy brown mustard.

Refreshing! Wash down with ice cold lemonade!

Weirder: My siblings and I used to eat mayo and peanut butter sammichs. Sometimes with banana. I think it may have been good 'cause it wasn't real mayo, it was that hippy "hollywood" brand natural safflower mayo which is another beast entirely.

Not so weird favorite: Runny sunny side up or over easy eggs atop hashbrowns and lots of catsup.

Another: Neopolitan ice-cream shakes at In-n-Out. They taste peanutbuttery for some reason. Good for dipping fries into. Yes, I dip fries in milkshakes.

I used to L-O-V-E LOVE peanut-butter-and-butter sandwiches. I'm half tempted to have one today...

In middle school, we ate everything with ranch dressing. Fries in ranch dressing. Hamburgers with ranch. Our favorite was bean sprouts (alfalfa sprouts?) dipped in ranch. Mmmm, ranch.

Kosher pickles dipped in sour cream. They have to be true kosher pickles. Clausen's work well.

One (1) bag plain M&Ms poured into one (1) bag Fritos (TM) brand corn chips. Shake.

The ranch-dressing-as-ubiquitous-condiment thing is also very Texan. (Except we pronounced it "rainch.")

mullacc: I always thought fruit relish was *supposed* to be eaten with meat?

Cheddar cheese and jam sandwiches
apple, bacon and peanut butter sandwiches

Graham crackers and cottage cheese
Applebutter and peanut butter on toast
Hot french fries dipped in a cold frostie (the fast-food type of fakey ice cream)

fritos and anything chocolate, definitely!

and cheezits and plain m&ms--a mixed handful at a time. : >

Very old (sharp) cheddar and my mom's homemade dill pickles. Preferably on a cracker...maybe a ritz, or half of a stoned wheat thin. (heh, stoned wheat thin!)

Eggo waffles with peanut butter and grape jelly.

I think that's all I have.

I just made some homemade pickles tonight, richat. Extra sour.Mmmmmm.

None of these sound gross at all. This thread is preggo heaven.

When we were teenagers, my brother and I discovered a lot of weird food combinations when we were low on groceries.*

-A big one was ramen noodles (plain, without use of the seasoning packet) coated in butter and any number of flavorings including hot sauce, maple syrup and cinnamon (not all at once).

-Sandwiches comprised of thick raw onion slices, cheddar cheese, mustard and BBQ sauce.

-Tostitos with peanut butter.

-Bagels with taco sauce.

*bear in mind that we were often stoned during these moments, and had a tendency to desperately throw together snacks out of whatever we could find in the house.

Other weird food combos I've encountered:

- In college my friends and I always tried to replace ketchup as a dipping sauce with fries. We tried honey mustard, buffalo sauce, pesto, garlic butter, mayo, BBQ sauce, peanut butter, jelly, maple syrup. My favorite was the ranch at Denny's - that shit's like crack.

- A girl I knew in middle school used to get the sides of pickles they sold in those little paper cups at the cafeteria and dip them in ranch salad dressing.

- For nearly a year my lunch every day was a toasted whole wheat bagel with cream cheese and a tomato slice seasoned with salt, pepper and a sprinkle of oil and vinegar, eaten like a sandwich alongside a cup of soup.

Dipping Nacho Cheese Doritos into tuna fish. Mmmmmmmmmm.

gaspode: yeah, I said I didn't think it was too weird. It just seemed weird to me when I first figured out how much I liked.

Anyway, TPS wins for grossest.

I had a butter, jelly and tuna fish sandwich when I was ten.

Like Nixon, I enjoy cottage cheese and ketchup.

Fresh-ground pepper on melon „ honeydew tasty, cantaloupe better.

Awesome.

Frozen banana and vodka cubes of ice are good on a hot day.

Salt on fruit. Kiwis in particular benefit from a bit of salt, but it improves most soft fruits (Fleur de Sel is best for this, not Maldon or similar big flakey sea salt stuff). But then I eat salt on its own quite a lot...

Also, I love roasted bone marrow, which some people seem to think is a bit... dog foodish. And all types of offal (except chicken gizzards, which taste of death and smell worse).

rob511 - I'm defo trying pepper on melon, sounds great. Maybe some chili flakes would work too...

Cream cheese & bologna sandwiches. Philly, Oscar Meyer, & white Wonder bread for trashtastic goodness but stracchino, mortadella & piazza bianca is what I usually get over here.

One might argue that I knew Italy was a perfect fit for me when I discovered that my preferred childhood "ew that's gross" treat was considered totally normal here.

Aww... TPS's is closest to mine. I like using Fritos as garnish. I crumble them up and put them on stuff. The last two things were kale salad and tuna salad. I think I'm willing to match most junk food chips with almost anything else.

When I am at McDonald's I like to put the french fries inside the burgers. I think this works the best with the Filet-o-Fish. Both of these are pretty trashtastic :)

When I was a kid, it was peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches with potato chips slipped inside. Crunch crunch squelch. With it, I invariably drank a root beer.

As a teenager, I discovered French fries dipped in thick chocolate milkshakes (I see now I'm not alone in that!) and original flavor Doritos (known to us as "battery acid flavor") and chocolate milk.

Now I'm a fan of spinach salads, loaded with vegetables, with a squeeze of lemon and a runny soft-cooked egg on top. The yolk runs all over everything, mixing with the lemon and making a sort of thick, fatty, cholesterol-laden dressing... Okay, I'll stop now.

I will definitely be trying M&Ms with corn chips. Salty, chocolatey, crispy, greasy, and sweet. Oh, sweet mercy, yum!
