Cheesesteak inventor dies.→[More:] I could eat a plain philly cheese steak, with a side of curly fries, a birch beer and two packs of Tastykakes EACH and EVERY DAY.
The first time I ever had a Philly cheesesteak was in Philly, at the airport. Probably not the best place in town, but the giveaway that it was good was the line of pilots waiting for their sandwiches. It was yummy, and I've perfected my own home-made version since then.
Having lived variously in DC, Hamburg (Germany), London, the Bay Area, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Boulder, I have been exposed to no small number of arcane local especialities (y'all ever heard of a 'buckeye'? hint: it's not a nut. well it is a nut, but its not the nut I'm thinking of)
I used to grizzle and moan that you could NOT get a good cheesesteak on the Front Range. That was until I started working up on campus and discovered the Half Fast sub shop on the Hill. oh my goodness!
RIP Harry, here's a bet St. Peter's got the grill all warmed up and ready to go.
In Austin, we have a place called Texadelphia where you can get one served "Texas-style" (i.e., smothered with jalapenos and queso). Probably considered sacrilege to a true aficionado, but damn tasty just the same.
