IrrationalAnnoyanceFilter: here's my stupid irrational annoyance of the day: oh-so-cutesy current vogue names such as 'Kelsey' 'Madison' or 'Bailey'. For girls? Ick.

bonus irrational annoyance of the day: my colleague and her rattly-ass seemingly endless bag of potato chips.

*krinkle... krinkle... snorf... munch... munch... smack... krunch... krinkle... krinkle... *

aaaaarrrgh!!!!
I am with you on both of those annoyances, especially the noise from coworkers.
I now sit just a couple feet away from a woman who sniffles and clears her throat every two to five seconds. After five+ years of sitting in an office, I was suddenly thrown back into cubeland, and it's not working out well for me.

Mmm...I *heart* my office...

...except we have this "open door" policy, and I feel really weird about closing my door to make personal calls, or to block out sounds from other offices, or the giant high bay right next door...

...also, sales people sort of annoy me.

Bi-polar instead of "bipolar".

Like nails on a chalkboard.

My desk chair.
The arms aren't quite even with each other.

God, I could just toss it out a window!

ok the chips would drive me to kill.

I always dump my chips or whatever on an unfolded napkin so no one has to listen to the crinkle

My little sister had at least four girls named Mackenzie in her grade. Also, there was a lot of over usage of the letter "Y" and names ending in "ee." Like, Brandee and Kylee. Drove me nuts.

I am on the same page with awful child names. My very best friend's wife just gave birth, I am glad he told me her name over the phone because I would have hated for him to see the look on my face when he told me her name, a name so odd I can't post it because I think she has a one in a million name. I wouldn't like it if he found out I think the name they chose is the most awful, hideous, ridiculous name that will cause this child years, possibly a lifetime of irreparable harm.....

I on the other hand have a pretty common first name that people STILL ALWAYS mess up.

If I ever have kids I am just going to number them. 742, have you cleaned your room yet?

I love the name "Riley" for a female person.

Does that make me bad?

har har, you'd best be getting started on that lot then :leer:

I sympathise. I have one of the Big Ten Common American Surnames... which people cannot seem to ever fathom how to spell. um, if you can't guess, wouldja please ASK? thanks.

Patrick Stack my link-fu is all bustigated, so surf here: http://www.stacked.patrickstack.com/index.php?s=white+trash+names did a sendup on the names deal awhile back. And yep, I'm a big ole midwest white trash hick myself, so I pretty much concur.

getoffmylawn - is her name Clitoris?

Opposite from that, I just remembered a (Scottish) friend of mine named her daughter Aiofe, which is pronounced and is Celtic for Eve. I like it a lot.
posted by Zack_Replica 20 July | 17:12
(I should note that Aiofe can also be pronounced Eva, but my friend took the Scots pronunciation that she'd grown up hearing.)

That was just a random number -actually it is an old address from a house I loved. I do not believe in procreation anyway, I was being a smart ass. I am a card carrying member of what used to be known as the ZPG (Zero Population Growth) movement.

My daughter's name is a flower. Still, everyone spells it wrong. There seems to be endless variations. Why would I spell it any other way than the way it is meant to be spelled? Do I seem cutesy to you, people? I should hope to hell not.

I see your smart assi-ness and raise you one 'oh snap!'. as in, dude I wasn't exactly being serious y'know

Some days whilst shaking my head in disbelief at the antics of my peers, I can only believe that I'm the rarest of the rare: a late thirtysomething female card-carrying ZPG member.

My daughter's name is that of a tree. . .middle name is after a german shepherd that I had 30 years ago.

Depending on her mood, these are, individually, either good or bad things.

Larch RinTinTin is a beautiful name, danf.

lonefrontranger: are you informing me you too are a ZPG member or are you making fun of me?
posted by getoffmylawn 20 July | 17:49
gettoffmylawn: the former.

tho if you'd prefer I could subject you to a furious taunting... (cue Monty Python references)

I'm not a card-carrying member of ZPG, but I'm decidedly in the camp of women who have made it to the early 40s without ever having felt the "mommy urge".

Caveat: I do believe in adoption though. I will never want to have/birth kids of my own, but if I met a child that was really in need of a family I would probably step up if I had the ability to do well for the child.

Lonefrontranger: Is today your first MeCha day? If that is the case, WELCOME. If not, where 'ya been hiding?
posted by getoffmylawn 20 July | 18:35
getoffmylawn: thanks.

I even made a creation for your lite-brite thread earlier (I got highly frustrated by that game as a yout'... frustration exacerbated by the fact that my best friend was a lite-brite genius.. GENIUS, I tell ya... *sigh* nothing ever changes)

but as noted above my link-fu doesn't seem to want to play well with MeCha. Heigh ho, heigh ho, its onto the short bus I go.

I've been lurking in MetaChat for a few weeks, and joined MetaFilter sometime last winter. Just thought I'd chime in. Boulder usually isn't this boring. or hot/humid/rainy either... shades of DC weather, ICK!!

and now I get to ride swim home on my fixed gear.

My beef with co-workers is the ones that are always on their cell phones. Always! What is it with them, and who are they talking to? Seriously, I work in a retail industry, and these idiots are yapping on private calls instead of taking care of the customers. Doesn't matter that they've been called out on it from the manager. I guess we'll have to resort to taking their phones away from them-like high school. Ridiculous.

I used to live in Denver. 72nd and Bradburn, Westminster. Again, Welcome. I am new here too. Lurking Mefi since January. I just love putting my 2 cents in where they weren't asked for.

o and last but not least, getoffmylawn: I wholeheartedly concur with your caveat in your last post. I've been a cycling coach for years, and as such I've had some memorable pseudo-parenting experiences, and in 2 cases basically managed to raise my own adolescent hellions by proxy. :sniff: one of 'em gets married next month; the one I frankly never expected to survive his teens. life is a funny old thing.

It looks like the most popular boy's names last year were pretty traditional.

Often people I've just introduced myself to try and cutesy up my name. They're convinced it has a "y", "ie", or "anine" on it. I don't like that.

All of a sudden the name "Neveah" is rocketing up the popularity charts. Ugh.
