AskMeCha: A Moving Proposal So at the end of this month, I'll be making my sixth apartment move since November 2002 and...[More:]...I'm gonna need a lot of help. Specifically, I need a lot of help with packing my things into boxes.

The first time a guy I'd been dating but wasn't serious about (obviously, 'cause I moved away) helped, the second time, my best friend helped, the third time, eight or nine of my friends helped me over a weekend (we made a party of it), and the fourth and fifth times, my fucktard ex helped.

Of course, I can't count on the fucktard ex to help this time, and most of the people I know who have been friends of mine and who I could count on for a huge favor like this live at least an hour away.

My best friend (who lives in NorCal) told me about an awesome experience he had where he hired a moving company who sent over three guys on the day of the move to put things in boxes, put them in the truck, and then put the packed boxes in the apartment. (They did not stay to help unpack; I'm sure that would have cost more.) He said their rate was $90 an hour.

The good thing is that my mom has agreed to pay for any associated moving costs like truck rental and boxes. But I'm wondering...
...should I abuse her largesse and ask her to front the money for movers? Or should I rent a truck and boxes myself and throw a MeCha party where after we're done packing/moving, I take everyone out to dinner at the nearest diner or other somewhat reasonably priced restaurant (on my mom's dime)?

Let me say, as someone who has had pro movers come and move all my stuff, it was a dream and a blessing. However, it takes a lot of time - a lot more than I had anticipated (and I don't have a lot of stuff). I took a quick look at the bill, and it was well outside of my means (my company paid for the move).

I haven't moved in a while, but learned two moves ago hiring the guys with a truck is great. I had my stuff pretty much boxed up and they came and quickly loaded the truck and unloaded it at the new place. They could move the heavy stuff without breaking it like I might have done with friends. Stairs were involved at both places. And it was nice not to test my friendships by asking for help. I think I paid about $150 total for my tiny apt contents. You get an estimate when you call or go online to set up the move and when they get there, they'll reconfirm before they start [like if you forgot a closet full of stuff, they'll let you know how much it will cost, etc].

My advice: be ruthless. Throw away everything.

In all honesty, it's been a while since we've had reason left to smile. || My mission is in Jeapordy! Destroy the planet! Repeat, Destroy the planet!
