If I'm not mistaken there was a fairly significant discovery made by some school kids using blue food coloring.

They were doing the usual dye-your-taste-buds to see them routine, and noticed the wide variation in density among their classmates.

Apparently no one had noticed just how big the range is from least to most in the population, far greater than normal variations of acuity in other senses. I recall that this discovery informed the current notion of super tasters.

So I guess one suggestion is to try a bunch of stuff and keep your eyes open.

I just wrote a 20 paragraph answer about cymatics and emergent behavior over there and accidently fucking hit ctrl-w instead of shift-w and dusted it.

grr. I actually kind of miss having my old super-unstable celeron 550 box with it's totally unstable and untrustworthy pre-firefox mozilla that either system crashed or browser crashed every 15 minutes or so, 'cause I always did my work in notepad and saved like every other line. grrrrrr.
