What client are you using, and what do you have in the "real name" field? (The part that people see when they /whois you, often displayed after the user@host.mask part.) It could be something as simple as having a character the server considers "illegal" in that field, though I can't think of anything off the top of my head that wouldn't be allowed there (control characters, maybe? I dunno.)

Whatever the case, it sure seems odd to me. I've been using IRC for the better part of 12 years as a user, oper, and admin, and I've never once heard of anyone being banned for what they had in the real name field.

Unless, of course, it's just Slashnet being fucky as mudpuppie says, and well, there's not much you can do about that but wait for it to be fixed.

Usually this means that something is wrong with the IDENT server lookup. In mirc there should be an option to enable IDENT server, and you should fill in a handle + name fields there. You should see in the mirc status window when the remote IRC server queries the IDENT server. It should look something like this:
