I got a question... I've known this woman for something like 10 years. She's not much of a reader, doesn't really have much of an appreciation for the arts, is not particularly stylish or interesting. Her own teenaged daughter calls her a 'depressed bitch.'[More:]

BUT...

For some reason, when we're in the same room with one another, all I can think of is how friggin' beautiful she is. I love her big blue eyes and ash blond hair and the shape of her hands, legs and feet and think of how I'd give anything to be her fella...even though I know a relationship with her would be a total disaster.

It's totally irrational!

Do any of you have someone who you're wildly attracted to for "no reason?"
Dude, I sorta understand where you're coming from.
All I can say is that it's a mystery. Or maybe something to do with smells.

I blame women for being hot.

All the time. It comes with being male. Your little instincts see someone and say "Wow, we would have extremely attractive offspring", and then you're all "Hey baby, let's propogate the species."

Hmm, I'm going to try that line sometime.

Weird thing is...she basically spent a weekend 'in' with me back in 1998...and proceeded to tell our friends about it...so naturally I thought we'd be on, but just as quick, she changed her mind.

She has a habit of sometime lashing out at people with little or no provocation and displaying other impulsive behavior, then acting like nothing happened.

I don't interact with her on a regular basis, but when I do see her it's like OMG all over again.

What about the ladies? Come on, fess up!

Yeah. Unfortunately, physical attraction is NOT a sufficient indicator of relationship potential. Maybe necessary, but not sufficient.

You wouldn't want life to be too easy now, would you?

It's usually that point after an initial crush subsides that you realize that you can't remember anyhting she said to you that was overly interesting.

callmejay: I'm freakin' 38 and single. YES I would like it to be that easy!

Looks aren't everything- after a short while, they aren't anything at all. Personality, sense of humor- these are the things to build a relationship on.

Sure, I've had my share of irrational attractions based on gut attraction and little else -- I figure most people have. If my experience is any guide I'd suggest dating her, if for no other reason than the fact that her lack of intellectual curiosity, anger management issues, etc. will soon create a combustible reaction that will totally overpower any dime-a-dozen pheromone-driven chemistry you're feeling now. Nothing like discovering someone makes you deeply miserable to render their lovely bone structure irrelevant.

Well, like I said...I've known her 10 years or so. I know dating would be a disaster...she's so damn CUTE tho!

AAAAAA!

Would it be out of the question if you and her were to start a "friends with Benny" type relationship?
posted by LunaticFringe 25 June | 12:16
That's good advice, scody. I agree.

It *sounds* like good advice, scody, but.... WHAT IF THE RELATIONSHIP WORKS!??! Then you're either Dr. Strangelove riding that nuke into the ground, or you have have to break up with an incredibly lovely woman. Either case would suck.

I don't understand the dilemma you present, Doohickie. Doesn't "the relationship works" mean, by definition, that they are both happy and they stay together? Otherwise, that's a pretty strange definition of "working".
