I heard the announcers say the following two things during World Cup matches:
1. He has plenty of speed and athleticism but not the football skills to match.
2. Specific to the US/Italy game: he was supposed to come in off the bench and inject some energy on the US side, but he seemed to play just like everyone else.
I don't know enough about soccer to really judge the validity of these two statements, but that's what I heard.
And his pass to Dempsey during the Ghana game was beautiful and in direct constrast to statement #1 above.
I think people expected him to shine in this World Cup. He didn't really live up to his potential. My complaint about Beasley has always been that he folds under the least bit of physical pressure. In the qualifiers, he seemed stronger to me. I really thought this was his year, but he was invisible most of the time.
I thought Arena didn't really use him right. First he had him starting out on the wrong side of the field and then it seemed like they were trying to have him and Donovan work it up the middle when they should have had DMB making long runs down the wings. If anyone played bad for the US I thought it was Reyna and Donovan

Yeah. Someone should find a picture of Daman from Ghana stealing the ball from and knocking over Reyna (right before schooling a goal) and make one of those "OWN3D!" pics.
