Note to my mom! Please don't put together a huge plastic tub of steamed broccoli and then never serve it. I had to throw out most of them, which pains me, because I love broccoli. I just have no way of knowing you have some stashed in your fridge rotting away.
I once threw out seven bags of carrots from my brother-the-lawyer's refrigerator. They had sprouted hair.

I once left an opened bag of carrots out on my counter when I went away on vacation. When I came back, they had dissolved. I picked the bag up off the counter and was horrified to see a 12 inch square sheet of clear, sparkly MUCUS lift up from the counter along with it. It was like a window into fungal horror.

The culprit, I suspect, was Mucor, a fungus that likes to prey on the faces of diabetic people. It is attracted to sugar. Carrots are very rich in sugar, and so is the snot of diabetic people; it starts in their nose and spreads, often eating large holes in their faces.
