A curious thing happened on my wait at the bank today... [More:] so I was standing in line at the bank, waiting for a teller.

It was pretty busy and there was this high functioning developmentally disadvantaged man in front of me. Big jolly fellow. When I got in line, he's finishing talking to the guy in front of him who was giving him the cold shoulder. Anyway, he and I started chatting.

Eventually the subject came out that I'm a graduate student.

So what do you study?

Neuroscience.

(very quickly)Like brains and stuff?

(Impressed and feeling good for the guy)Yes =)

So you're going to be a brain surgeon?

No, I'm going to grow up to tell brain surgeons what to do.

---

So anyway, just about everyone in line is chuckling or giggling and people are turning around and smiling at me.

WTF?! (and just then a teller was available and my new friend went on to perform some financial transaction)
They thought you where funn?

Were your pants down? That could explain it.

Actually, you know what, sometimes it just makes people happy to see strangers treat other people, especially someone with a disability, with respect.

Or maybe the secret word of the day was neuroscience?

I would have been smiling, porpoise, for exactly the reason fenriq mentioned. The first reason, that is.

Not to my pride, at all, but I tend to be intimidated by people different than me, in that way.

I admire you for flowing with it and having a nice exchange.
