Public Service Announcement. Does anyone remember how Winamp used to be...?[More:]Well I've just discovered XMPlay (get it here) for any bunnies who want a trip back in time. 290kb download. Portable (no installation required - just a zip file). Plays mp3, ogg, mods, wma, you name it. Handles streaming radio great. Minimal, functional interface. The ideal companion to Radio Metachat. Enjoy.
This is a great little utility. Winamp has got far too cumbersome and I get a lot of audio conflicts when I have Winamp running with other things (in particular my favourite game). XMPlay is running just fine without any conflicts.

Thanks Jimbob!

Hmmmm! The main thing that chafes my scrote with Winamp right now is the repeating and BEEPING reminder to update (with a very cumbersome update process that's tres 1996).

Yeah, I think Winamp is getting too cumbersome. XMPlay seems OK, it's certainly fast but the skins are hideous. I'll try it for a while though, maybe as it proves it's usefulness I won't care what it looks like.

Thanks jimbob

scarabic, you can turn that off in preferences (or at least you used to be able to).

Does anyone else get glitches in audio playback in winamp when using the keyboard - little skips and dropouts? That's gotta be the most annoying thing it does, at least for me. I've got several skins I like, although the "modern" ones tend to crash the entire program regularly for me. Its GUI is still fairly compact, and it does video quite well as well, and it doesn't force you to use it as a media library like other programs seem to want. But that skipping thing is driving me insane. I'll have to try this XMplay.

Winamp got too cumbersome back in 1999 or so. ;-)

Foobar2000 regins supreme for lightweight playback, IMO. There's also a plugin called Oddcast that is shoutcast compatible, although I haven't tried that yet.

Keypress skips are sometimes video driver issues. Are you running the latest, correctest driver for your video card?
