I am in the doghouse... [More:]After this, I bought the cats a collar each today - nice ones, orange for Bailey and green for Lucy, with the loudest bells I could find on them. I ambushed them when I got home to put the collars on (the cats are chipped and have never worn collars) and they look very pretty indeed.

But now they are both glaring at me with that 'you are worse than Hitler' look that cats do so well.
I meant to comment on that thread last night, essexjan: I tried belling my cats repeatedly, and no collar or bell ever lasted more than about two hours. They would give me the look of Doom, saunter out the door and return debelled and still mad at me.

I am sure they will forgive you. Perhaps even before they figure out how to get them off....

I guess this answers the ancient question: "Who will bell the cat?"

I missed that thread, too. You're belling your cats... to protect birds?

If so, it doesn't work. Cats figure out within days how to move without ringing the bell. Yes, the bell rings when they pounce, but that just means that the last sound a birdie hears is "ding".

I'm sure they look fetching, and .. they'll forgive you within days.

I remember when my family put bells with collars on our cats. One is not bright and we found her half an hour later running like a maniac all over the yard. She was trying to get away from the sound.

I hope the bells help!
