MP3 editing software...what's good and free? [More:]

My daughter is asking me to recommend an editing program for MP3s, and I don't know of any. Can anyone recommend any good, free, easy learning curve ones? She needs to be able to take an existing MP3 and edit out curse words (she's making CDs for teenagers to cheer and dance to and they have to be rated PG), and she needs to be able to shorten songs or just sample them and mix them together. What programs do all this?
Audacity can! It's pretty straightforward - even I could work it.

Yeah, audacity is super easy.

The only problem might be figuring out how to make the beeps over the naughty words. But with a little bit of experimentation it's not that hard.

If, for some reason, Audacity isn't the answer: I think there's an old version of CoolEdit that's free, though it might be some trouble to find it.
