I love Robert Altman and I LOVE A Prairie Home Companion but I don't love the idea of Robert Altman making a movie of A Prairie Home Companion... Why? Shouldn't this just be two great tastes that taste great together?
Just think! Li-Lo is in it! That's worth the price of the ticket right there.

Because Altman has done some really bad things?
Because of Kevin Kline?
Actually i think it will probably as good as it possibly could be.

i think because it's a RADIO show! It's a damn good radio show! Some things don't NEED to be movies....

but it's a radio SHOW. People watch the show while they do it on the radio.
and it's Altman. It will be about something else entirely.

That said, a lot of things don't need to be movies, like other movies.

Garrison Keillor is going to be at B&N tonight. We Minnesotans have a love/hate relationship with him.

Us above average good lookin' folks.

This is going to be great! I disagree. I can't wait for it.

Kevin Kline is a consummate actor - he improves everything he's in (i.e. The Life of a House - easily one of the worst movies ever made, except for his performance).

This will be a great movie - mark my words.

Don't forget -- it's not just a radio show. It's a book (and set of monologues, of course). It sounds as though the movie is based on the atmosphere of the book.

I think it'll be pretty good -- I guess my only trepidation is that Altman's got a sharp, sarcastic edge, whereas Kiellor rarely does. Hope they can make the fit work.

I heard they just wrapped on Darren Aronofsky's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! movie.

I was thinking yesterday how great "Whaddya Know" is. That show gets away with everything. Just because they broadcast from Madison, Wisconsin, they have this thin veneer of NPR-worthy, high-minded Midwestern wholesomeness...but Michael Feldman is cuttingly-sneeringly funny, nastily political, and gets a lot of rather risque sexual humor in.

When something that's not a movie gets made into a movie that means it's going to be "packaged" as some kind of specific experience the filmmaker thinks you want to have. These projects get started when some marketer somewhere identifies that there is a ready-made audience out there, pre-existing loyal fans. That marketer then sits down to write a film that will deliver what s/he thinks that audience wants (with some pandering to a mainstream audience, too). The film winds up playing like a "greatest hits of," and often gets some Hollywood whitewashing/dumbing down along the way.

You take something you already enjoy and you hope that a movie will take it to the next level, offer you something even more. But then you see the movie and all it does is bend over backward to hit all the familiar notes that will make you say "aha! I get the reference! hoho!" This is a little banal and ultimately not that satisfying.

Radio show made into a movie?
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

You know what else, Michael Feldman frequently drinks on his show. Meanwhile, I'm planning on hitting APHC opening night, because, well, just because. I am a loyal fanboy, and probably the youngest one I know of. When I first found out about this, by accident, while flipping through links on imdb, I assumed it was a joke. The concept just seemed too absurd to be for real. That said, I think that Altman might be able to make this work, so I'm willing to withold judgement untill I've seen it.
