BeadForLife Women in Uganda making beautiful beads in hopes to rise above poverty. [More:] I just read an article about Bead for Life yesterday, and had to share it with the bunnies.

A woman in Uganda was taught by an aid worker to make beads from magazine shreds, she in turn taught 45 other women, and Bead for Life was born. The only other work available to these women is rock crushing in a neighboring quarry for a dollar a day. With Bead for Life, these women have tripled their income, many have savings plans and for the first time are able to feed their families three meals a day. It is estimated that Bead for Life is now supporting more than 1,600 people.

In 2005 they raised enough money amongst themselves to erect a building in which they could sell their wares out of the sun. The women carried supplies on foot from a lumber yard five miles away, then built the 20 x 50 foot structure in six days.

Take a look at the website, read the workers' biographies, and maybe buy a bracelet for $5. 100% of proceeds go back to beading community. I know bunnies have good hearts, and so thought this might be something you'd be interested in.
That is beautiful. My best friend's fiancee makes bead jewelry - I just sent her the site.

Oh wow Via. I'm bookmarking this, and once I get some cash, I'm definitely placing an order. I love beads, and I can use them for our BFF bracelets!

Awesome! I love every aspect of this. I'm also forwarding it on to my family and will post it on my blog.

Thanks for posting this!

These are beautiful. I don't know if I can order from the UK but I've sent it to a few friends in the US who I know will love it.

They're wonderful, and Bead For Life is inspiring. I wish they'd charge more; rolling those beads is very tedious and finicky work.

Thanks for the great link, viachicago.
