Ready to Taste the Kool-Aid I have decided that it is time for an Ipod[More:]Who among the Bunnies has one . . .are they really worth it, over and above a regular portable cd player?

If I made the plunge, what should I get? I would merely use it for bike riding and other exercise. . .

Where would you look for one, if you were going to buy one?

Thank in advance. . .
I just got mine and it's already become an appendage of my body. Go for it, dude.

There is no comparison between an mp3 player and an cd player, danf. You won't be sorry. It's really a fantastic thing to have.

If you are in school or know someone who is in school, you can save a few bob by buying one through that education channel. Put the $20-40 you save into a protective silicone cover.

I figure that one of those goatse.de covers would be a good addition.

The difference between having a CD player an MP3 player is the difference between having some music availble to you and having ALL your music available to you.

If you're walking home, and for some reason you want to hear Purple Rain, you can (assuming you have it). If you're at a party and someone says 'danf, can you bust some tunes?', you can.

Also, the difference between 'just a bit bigger than pocket-sized' (cd player) and 'pocket sized' (iPod) is HUGE.

I love mine- but I'm a straphanger. If I had a car, I probably wouldn't use mine nearly as much (although now I guess they have the plugins for your car, so yea, maybe so).

I have one. I bought a 1st generation one long ago, thinking I really might hate it.

I love it.

I later purchased a mini and a shuffle for the missus. She loves the mini. The shuffle disappeared, but it was loved until we lost it.

If I was going to replace them today, I'd buy a 4GB nano for exercise and a 60GB iPod for travel and driving. I don't know which I would choose if I had to pick just one.

I don't have one, nor do I hanker for one. I don't like to be cut off from what's going on around me.

I could not live without my iPod. Well, I probably could, but it would be a very sad life. I have an hour commute each way to work and am also prone to flying across the Atlantic several times per year - if I had to actually PAY ATTENTION to my fellow humans during transit, I would go berserk.

Pre-iPod, I had a clunky CD player and 7,000 clunky CDs. My life is much sleeker now.

(I have a 10BG gen3. Had the battery replaced after the class action suit and it's still going fine. Sometimes I hanker for one of the newer, prettier ones, but a nano is too small and easy to break - I have a friend whose nano got bent and it no longer works - and I don't really *need* 30GB.)

(I converted my husband to iPodism by giving him a lovingly used mini for Christmas. He loves it.)

PS: Look at the refurbished selection on the Apple website. Great deals and if something's not quite right, they will fix it ASAP.

Be a rebel, danf! Get yourself a portable cassette recorder, a couple rolls of duct tape, some C cell batteries, and kick it up Old School.

Though on a more serious note, I migrated to a 3G unit after riding the late 90's with MiniDisc gear. Haven't looked back since.

And no, I wasn't an early adpoter with MD. I was involved with radio.

I had to live without mine for over a month, and it was a TORTUROUS AWFUL MONTH!

Grapefruitmoon. . .the local college bookstore discounts, them, so it looks like I can get a new model of whatever for about 10 bucks more than I could get a refurb from their site, plus no postage.

But thank you for letting me know. . .

I am weakening here. . .I want one. . .I hate wanting stuff. . .plus my wife and daughter think that ipods are cultish and that anyone who has one, HAS drank the kool-aid. . .

But if/when I buy one, I'll bet that I'll end up having to 'borrow' it from daughter. . .

My 4G iPod is a miserable piece of crap that has given me nothing but problems, turns off whenever it feels like it, goes on extended power outage vacations, plays some songs have way through, refuses to keep a full charge longer than 2 hours, etc, etc, etc.. I've had it replaced FIVE times.

With that said, I love my iPod like nothing else, and can't imagine my life without it.

I love my 60GB iPod dearly, but I really wish Apple would roll out a 100GB model. :(

There are non iPod mp3 players. A friend of mine likes his iRiver H120. Explore the options/alternatives. iTunes is not a great content manager, as far as I'm concerned. And I'm not overwhelmed by the iPod's navigation. Does it let you edit playlists on the fly yet?

Good luck, whatever you choose!

Amberglow's still waiting for the deluxe model.

Totally worth it over a CD/MD portable. I do my best listening away from my computer (bus/train). Because it so easy to transfer stuff across, it's made me much more willing to try new stuff out. It's broadened my taste ten-fold.

I do wonder nobody but Apple seems to be capable of putting out a 'classically' styled MP3 player.

This is the best reason for having one, in my opinion. Retreat to your own private world and forget everyone else.

I mentioned in a previous iPod-related thread that I replied to the question "What is your most treasured possesion and why?" intended for a team profile in our department newsletter with "My iPod, to drown out the voices in my head", thinking that they wouldn't publish it, but imagine my surprise when the newsletter came out today with my answer included. Almost as career-limiting as my co-worker who, when asked what she wanted to be as a child said that she wanted to work with animals and went on to intimate that our clients have fulfilled that wish for her, which was also published.

I, too, have decided to forego constant musical stimulation. Two things happened: My PDA audio jack crapped out, effectively killing my 1 GB portable audio player. Also, I learned to ride a motorcycle, which has become my primary transport. I declined to install any helmet audio system. So while I haven't reached any great commune with nature, I've expanded the capacity of my brain's mp3 player.
