WTF is "The Amazing Walter" doing with that fire hydrant?

I keep trying to talk the mister into going to the sandcastle competition. For two years we lived about 45 minutes from Harrison Hot Springs.

Wow those are awesome. I'd hate to have to judge those, b/c they'd all be 1st place in my book.

How do they keep the sand from falling apart? My sandcastles always collapse...

glue, I believe. Come to think of it, I'm not sure exactly how they do it. I think i'll look that up.

There was a clip on TV the other day of a reporter at one of these sand sculpture things and she touched one of them and it collapsed. Oops!

I think they use water, obviously, to mold it together. And it's packed down tightly, for control and for definition. These are fantastic, but I agree with Five Fresh Fish-what IS the "Amazing Walter" doing?! Hey, deborah, go without him!

Unbelievable! And I'm with Alex, how do they stay together? If they aren't adding something, I wonder if the beach sand doesn't contain a high portion of clay. I am adding this to my "places to go before I die" list.

I seem to recall that the only allowable addition in any respectable sand modelling competition is water. The key is the perfect degree of wetness and working fast enough to not disturb the structure once it starts to dry.

This is what happens when they decide to be the news instead of just reporting the news.
