Purebred cats kind of weird me out, since there are so many perfectly wonderful cats at shelters needing to be adopted. But, I got in a big fight about this with a somewhat touchy friend a couple years ago, so I'll just say "it doesn't do it for me" and not get on a high horse about it.
I see where you are coming from (none of my cats are purebreds either) but there are upsides. Most bred cats are going to be altered to begin with, so no unwanted litters of kittens, there will not be any of the problems that arise from brothers and sisters having kittens and you more or less know what you are getting, adopting from an animal shelter is rarely (if ever) free and who knows what your new pet will turn out to be like. Of course some purebred cats can have breed-specific problems of their own.
Though a lot of people with kitties would not have them, I dream of a world in which there are no wild housecat populations and breeding is more strictly controlled so there are not shelters full of unwanted cats and hungry, sick cats roaming neighborhoods and reducing the songbird population at the same time.
