Sshhhhh!!! You'll wake the baby! [More:]It's almost 1am. Mrs nomis has fallen asleep on the couch and our house guest has gone to sleep. I'm still up drinking vodka and tonic. Mrs nomis brought me home a little gift today - Supernature by Goldfrapp. I currently love Goldfrapp. Right now we're listening to Dido's second album, which mrs. nomis listened to every night when I was away for 9 months to help her get to sleep - hence the current state of napping. Meanwhile, she also brought home Madonna's latest effort, which I like for the track with the Abba sample (from my second favourite Abba song!). And next Saturday, we're going back to Peru for 3 months of jungle village life. So what's new with you?
Woops I thought that was the "more inside" box ... hope me etc.

turns out it was. yay me.

Actually this seems to be a very strong vodka and tonic. Lucky I don't like tonic.

Actually, I fixed it for you ;)

So I guess you don't want me to stand outside the baby's window and bang pots together? Because I will if you really want me to.

Peru! Tell more.

Thanks iconomy! Let me tell you about Peru...

Ok so Peru has filthy crime-ridden cities and remote unspoiled tropical rainforest, where you can meet indigenous amazonians who are not only the most photogenic people alive but also a lot of fun to hang out with. Plus they brew their own alcoholic beverages and love dancing.

Why the jungles of Peru? Are you an anthropologist or a wildlife researcher or sumpin'?

I've been to the jungle once for three days. It rocked and the people were awesome. The booze was a little...um...rustic for my liking but was an awesome experience. I even ate some Lemon Ants, they taste like lemon. I'm totally jealous of you nomis.

I'm a linguist. I'm writing a grammar of Aguaruna which is a Jívaro language (they are famous for shrinking heads). They live in the very very northern part of Peru, up to the border with Ecuador.

On preview: LF, yes the people are great. The booze consists of chewed-up and spat-out manioc but once you get used to it (and realise it's the only booze in the village) it's all good. On double preview: jonmc would love it.

Wow, very cool. Sounds like fascinating work.

That was the part of Peru that I was told to avoid because of the kidnappings. I went to the Yuturi jungle resort out of Coca in Ecuador.

It's the best job I've ever had.

I am jealous, nomis, of both your vodka and your trip to Peru. And also, your super cool career.

I want to be nomis. *pouts*

What was the booze called again? I can't remember the word... :(
posted by LunaticFringe 19 May | 11:12
LF: masato is the word used in Peru.
jrossi: I'm hoping this trip will be great. Last time I got really lonely (Mrs Nomis stayed in NZ) and I got beaten up and robbed (least favourite holiday experience EVAR)...but on the plus side, jungle people never steal and are very welcoming, and the vodka is nice :)

Peru has some kickass surfing, too, and world-class surfers like Sofia Mulanovich (second link has sound).

Eek, nomis, that must have been scary. Hope you have better luck this time.

"Masato" is "pulque" in many other Latin American countries.

[listening unblinkingly to nomis' tales of Peru & his very, very interesting job]

I visted teh town where Sofia Mulanovich learned to surf! Its a beautiful town and we stayed at a hotel (los Olas) that is owned by a some famous surfer guy. But I can't remember his name. I do recall that he had a daughter and now I'm thinking its her! How cool would that be? We watched her surf and she was amazing for only being 9-ish years old (that was in 2002).

Wow... sounds like quite the adventure. Safe trip to you and the mrs. Looking forward to updates, if possible (in this jungle, there is internet?).

And, I must say, napping's the best. I'm a champion napper myself.

(Be sure to kiss vivala on cup while she sleeps.) : )

Interestingly, the language I'm studying is (a dialect of) Jivaro.

I went to one of the best beaches last time, right up on the north coast near Ecuador. Got very sunburnt. Drank a lot.
