Do they teach architects/engineers to write like this? (Hi Speck!) I just received engineered drawings for a project I'm coordinating at work and they had a COMPUTER FONT that looks just like architect writing! Wow. So, um, what's the font called?
Engineered specs/'puter font.

Hey, I'm easily amused.

Yep they teach them to write like that. My husband has the exact same printing except that his capital As are triangles.

Maybe the font is called Architect? Going out on a limb here... ;)

I set you up for that joke!

Yeah, but, um... how come that cool font isn't in my MSWord?

And did you change my 's.' to a 'c.' today? 's.' means 'siecle,' or century in French, heh...

Some Europeans have handwriting just like this, btw. I'll scan an old pic and post it later.

I'm bored, canyatell?

Somebody please send me that! I work with architects and am dying to feel included in their little clique!!! It's not enough to use special fonts to make my writing look like Morrissey's.

My brother just sent me this font link, if it helps.

DUDE that linked photo is called fuquay varina after one of the fine metropolises of the great state of north fucking carolina, and f.v. is a very fine place, indeed.

I know I saw a shoutout from the Seattle meetup last week where Specklet wrote like this, but I can't find it now.

Amro, it's probably on Agropyron's photostream.

I still have a map Specklet drew of how to get from her house to the hotel I was staying in that weekend. It was beautiful.

occhiblu beat me to it, but Tekton aka Technical was pretty popular back in the 90s for a while.

Yes, they teach architects how to write like this. It developed, I believe, because it's an easy style for someone with a drafting pencil (originally chiseled, later the type that you extend when it wears down) to emulate. It has its charms, although my graphic design instincts tell me that it should be lower-cased for readability.

Frank Lloyd Wright had his own distinctive, 20s-esque version [low-res sample], and actually designed several typefaces for his own books and exhibitions -- one of which is now an official, digitized typeface, Eaglefeather.

Here's Architectural Lettering, and Blueprint. Also Quicksans Accurate and Rubino Sans.

Ah, with some googling around I found a bit of a pre-war instruction book.

the fuquay varina country store over on academy is getting a beautiful new western union sign, heh.

it took me a while to get the pronunciation down: foo-KWAY.

Hey, that's my drawing!

Yep, we're taught how to write like that. There are lots of fonts that emulate it, mostly used in AutoCAD on architectural plans.

stilicho is exactly right: It developed, I believe, because it's an easy style for someone with a drafting pencil (originally chiseled, later the type that you extend when it wears down) to emulate.

I'm an aaaamaaaanuensis! *sing-songs*

Specklet was kind enough to give us an example of that kind of writing at the meetup. It was very cool.
