A couple of interesting sites.[More:]

And a lament:

The trouble with having lived in Israel and traveled in Egypt is that sometimes places and people you know are blown to smithereens. A disco here, a bus stop there; they all start to add up - they say you can't go home again, which I don't really buy, but for sure you can't go there again. It's gone.

I spent a few weeks on the Sinai Peninsula ten or so years ago, stopping in Dahab and Tarabin on the east coast. This past Monday, two of my favorite restaurants were bombed in the name of who knows what, and locals who I got to know and love were killed and maimed, and life, I guess, goes on. What do I do about it? I can't go getting the shakes every time I read a paper, and I can't sleep all that well, either.

I've been chewing on this all week. Sorry to spit it here. It's something worth thinking about.
I'm not good at platitudes, but I hear you.

I'm ready to reprise the ole Abbie Hoffman "surround the pentagon and chant out the demons" move, but somehow we have to hold hands and surround the whole motherfucking earth.

I'm on a Neil Young mission today... "Why do I keep fucking up?"

A good friend of mine (and a cousin of my ex-husband's) was killed in a bus bombing in Jerusalem in February of 1996. His name was Matt Eisenfeld, and he was studying to be a rabbi. Both he and his girlfriend were killed, along with about thirty others.

The last time I saw Matt was after another cousin's Bat Mitzvah in New Orleans a year or so before. I remember after the festivities, a group of us went roaming down Bourbon Street and, with most of the bars too crowded to push in, we ended up just hanging out on a corner, and Matt and I, seated on the curb, with all the noise and crowds around us, got in this long discussion on the existence of God/meaning of life (I'm an atheist myself, but fall strongly on the side of life-is-still-meaningful).

Whenever there's violence, I think of Matt. He walked a little bow-legged and had a goofy smile. He would've made a good rabbi.
