24 April 2006

Mats' Fender Bender First off, I'm fine. My car is fine. I just wanted to let you guys know what happened with my car since a few people already know via IRC/text message and I mentioned it in the Google thread. [More:]When I was leaving my job on the Eastside to head down to Portland on Friday, an old guy in a van changed lanes on top of me when I was in his blind spot, dented my passenger side door, and took off the clamshell holding my side view mirror. We were only going about 20-30 MPH (traffic was rush-hour style around Renton even though it was only 2pm), and there was no one in the carpool lane where the nose of my car ended up after he bumped me. The guy is a disabled veteran, and he offered to pay my auto body estimate in cash since he had some sort of problem with his employer not renewing his insurance in a timely manner. I made a report to my insurance company just to cover my ass, and am going to get an estimate today, and then check if I can get the money from the guy. If not, I am covered for uninsured motorist damage, although I would have to pay an up to $1000 deductible, and the damage is probably less than that. Anyway, it's my first accident since I learned to drive just over a year ago! The weirdest thing is that even though I saw him coming after me in slow motion, I didn't even have time to react or honk my horn, but I wasn't scared at all. I seem to have this strange ability to go into a totally competent headspace when I'm in crisis, and only get emotional later.
Were you okay later? Or did you get some kind of delayed shock reaction?

And I really, really wanted to get to Portland!

Jan - no, I was mostly just pissed off. He wouldn't pull over right away, so he signaled me all the way to Southcenter Mall (about 10 minutes down the road) before I could get to talk to him - it turns out he's in a wheelchair so that was probably just the safest spot for him to get out, since we were on a major highway with lots of interchanges.

Then I got, um, distracted for the next couple of days in Portland, and by the time I got my clothes back on again and headed for home, I just wanted to figure out whether I should report it to my insurance or not. I got some good advices from various people, so all should be on track now.

So it was you I heard moaning in Laurelhurst Park!

I know that paralysis thing all too well. And I never really understood how people managed to sound the horn in situations like this anyway. You're too busy trying to get out of the way or trying to process what's going on to be able to take one hand off the wheel and sound the horn.

Seriously, I'm glad to hear that you're fine and the damage was not serous.

Relieved, also, to hear that you're mostly ok - hope the paperwork crap isn't too craptacular.

I'm so glad you weren't hurt. Car wrecks scare the hell out of me. I try to drive as infrequently as humanly possible.

The bodywork estimate is about $1500.

Wow, could have been much much worse. Glad you're OK.
