24 April 2006

I feel really horrible right now. Aaaaaaaugh.[More:]
First, greetings from Vegas! Poker's dead during the day so I'm playing on the internet for a few hours. (That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.)

So, I agonized over my shoutout list. Krix will tell you. And, as I knew I would, I forgot some people. In particular, the overseas people. I tried to do it by region in my head. I remembered Canada but completely forgot the rest of the world. Bad, bad Cabana Boy.

In particular, I'm very sorry to have forgotten essexjan. Consider this your personal front page shoutout, sweetheart. I'm sorry!
mike, look here and feel better dude. Course, I can't speak for EJ, perhaps she's in a blood rage of fury right now, mad at being ignored, but...I think it's okay.

you remembered me, but what about pips and the Wino? I'll let it go this once, but next time, I cut off a finger.

I chose to believe that that blob west of rebirtha says "Capn"

At least Einstein remembered essexjan.

Thanks for the shoutout!

That's my first shoutout! Thanks mike! I'm sending lucky thoughts your way so you can win some big money...

Apologies in advance for bad code

Don't feel bad. It looks like you only had a little bit of paper to work with. When I did my first official shout-out, I had to really think about who I wanted to put on it and not offend anyone else. It doesn't hurt that I don't know many people very well...

Where in Vegas are you, mike?

I love it when Cabana Boy grovels. And that's Miss sweetheart to you!

It is better to be shouted out than shouted at.

I had a shoutout I'm particularly proud of. Anyone wanna see it again?

You know, this is something which may (or may not) have interesting game theory implications. Let's assume we want to maximize the number of those who are happily shouted-out and minimize those who feel rejected within the constraints that we not only cannot include everyone, but further that we're limited to the number of persons someone with three drinks and writing on a napkin are likely to recall. The greater the number of people, the less value each is likely to place on his/her shoutout. The greater the number of people, the more likely those who are not included will feel themselves snubbed. Conversely, if we only shoutout to one person, that one person feels very special and everyone else does not feel terribly neglected. So we probably cannot confidently say that simply maximizing the number of shoutouts is optimal. It may well not be. Increasing the joy of inclusion while minimizing the sorrow of exclusion may be subtle.

Or not.

Next time I'm printing out the wiki Member page and just holding it up to the camera. Poo on me.

I'm staying at Bellagio, mullacc. Free 5-star room! My buddy is here for a conference and is charging the room to his company. So, other than flight and meals, I keep my entire profit. So far I'm up $500 at the poker tables, and will probably head back sometime late afternoon. People aren't drinking yet and all the tables are filled with grinders right now. Not a profitable situation.

Sounds deeeelicious!

I don't get it. What does a large rectum have to do with you?

"I'm staying at Bellagio, mullacc. Free 5-star room!"

Ooh, how fun! I've never, ever gambled (not even bought a lottery ticket) and have never been to Las Vegas. But back a few years ago when I had all that money, I decided it was the time for me and my SO to go. On the spur of the moment. I got plane tickets through Priceline and booked a weekend at the Bellagio (after evaluating the different five-star hotels). I also planned to be willing to gamble five to ten thousand dollars because this would be my one and only experience of this and I'd always thought playing the nickel slots is sort of pathetic.

My SO couldn't get organized, we missed the flight, and the airline told us we were SOL. So we drove to Houston instead and stayed at the nicest hotel I could find there, Four Seasons downtown—not a five-star hotel; Houston doesn't have one—got the nicest room available on short notice and spent four days in bed and getting the most excellent room service. Which was fun. But I very much in retrospect regret missing that trip to Vegas. I'll not have another opportunity like that in my life, barring great success in some second-half-life career.

Live it up, buddy!

Aw, sorry your Vegas trip didn't work out kmellis. It's a great place but definitely EXTREME. Sensory overload. I definitely can't spend too much time here - it's too physically and mentally exhausting. But this is my third trip out here in six months. It's hard to pass up a short vacation on which I make a profit in most cases. I don't have plans to come back till the meetup in September, but the money I make this trip will go to good use on travel plans this summer, for sure.

I'm gonna pretend that crossed-out shoutout was for me, though I can tell it really was a messup of 'dame'.

Better yet, maybe we can establish a tradition here for when you get the shoutout freezeout. Some other form of notice, some special recognition. Something you're eligible for only if you don't get mentioned in the most recent shoutouts.

The shoutout thing is so hard. I mean, on the one hand, it's a really nice thing to acknowledge people who have had some sort of effect on you. But the problem is, it's impossible -- impossible -- to remember all those who have. And when you don't see your own name on someone's list, I think you've just got to remind yourself that you have made some sort of positive impact on them, even if it didn't transmit itself from the brain to the paper. It shouldn't have to leave to hurt feelings, because this is not that kind of place.

The Bellagio's poker room is nice. If you hang around you'll definitely see some recognizables faces playing in the roped-off section.
posted by mullacc 24 April | 15:23
Thank you, mudpuppie. I actually struggled with whether I should take that picture at all because I knew there were people I was forgetting. I certainly didn't expect to forget some of my very favorite bunnies, and I'm actually pretty embarrassed.

My friend played for three hours two nights ago at the same table as James Woods! What a cool story.

There is a WPT event here this week so the pros are everywhere. Last night we saw Hansen, Chan, Esfandiari, Farha, among others. It's more of a curiosity for me; I don't get starstruck at all. Cool, though.

I really want to go play now and I probably will even though afternoon play isn't the best.

Enforced shoutouts, like enforced fun, lead to bummers, buzzkills and mellow-harshings, all things that I am totally and forever against and not for as well. Mike I hope you get the mortal nuts.

Tis true, 'pupps. No worries, shouters -it's all good!

I agree with mudpuppie. The shoutouts can be fun, but we shouldn't put too much pressure on people to remember us in that scattered moment at the pub after traveling and having a drink and meeting new people and suchlike.
posted by Miko 24 April | 15:42
Back to the tables.

I hope I don't regret this.

Thanks, everyone, for understanding if you were forgotten. I really wish I'd remembered everyone, but that's probably a little too much to ask for even my impressive intellect. Grr, and argh, and such.
posted by mike9322 24 April | 15:46
Yep, I know when I pout about being left out of a shoutout, it's all in fun. I'd like to think that others are being similarly jocular.

I tease because I love!

I always try to shout out to abstract concepts, my own sockpuppets, or rabbits with wide redeyes.

Simplifies things.

Cabana Boy: I did! I want to see a sexy Cabana Boy photoshoot! From Vegas! It's only only 2 or 3 pm over there, right? So you should get down to the pool at the Bellagio, borrow one of those cabanas and SHOOT PICTURES.

I humbly request this.

I got shouted out, but I'm often forgotten. And I always forget people. It happens.

I think everyone should get a blanket forgiveness for forgetting names when there's no Internets available. It's like walking into a record store: you may have a long list of albums you want to buy, but as soon as you step foot in the store, you forget almost all of them.
posted by me3dia 24 April | 16:19
Does blanket forgiveness mean you get to cuddle under a blanket with the person who forgot to shout you out?
posted by matildaben 24 April | 16:32
I think that is a fine suggestion, tilda. Everyone listen to tilda! She's bright.
posted by mike9322 24 April | 17:27
I think some names are simply harder to remember than others. NAMES LIKE SEANYBOY! Ahem, as I was saying, yes. Some names are harder to remember than other names. That's definitely it.

*sigh* Come get under the blanket, seanyboy.
