Reverse Surprize party [More:]April first got me thinking about this. I wonder if anyone else has done this or heard about it.

You invite the guest of honor over for say, sunday brunch for her birthday, just you and so's. The table is all set with 3 or 4 places, you pop a cork, toast her, etc. and the doorbell rings and it is Gretel! Gretel just stopped by to return a tape and that is great but guess who is here- SueAnn! and it is her birthday! Have some champagne, we'll set another place we have lots of food. So people keep stopping by for some reason or the other and they all know SueAnn and would love to celibrate her birth and you just keep squeezing more placemats on to the table until Clueless Karen or someone else walks in without any pretext whatever and SueAnn shouts, "Enough with the placemats! I get it!" I think we got up to seven before that happened.

Did we make this up? or is it a classic that we heard about but forgot?
Did it for my mom's 70th.

I think it would be better to, on your birthday, arrange dinner dates with several friends and family members, but not tell any of them that there will be anyone else. They'll assume it's a tete-a-tete and you can be like, SURPRISE! It's my party, bitch!

pointilist, I like that idea. Fun.

Eideteker... I like that idea too!

I read "reverse surprise party" and thought "SURPRISE! YOU THOUGHT THERE WAS GONNA BE A PARTY FOR YOU BUT NO-ONE'S COMING!"

I thought it was a really bad idea.

I did this with my (now ex) husband, with friends/neighbours dropping in until the place was full. He pretended to like it at the time but sulked for weeks afterwards, the grumpy, unsociable bastard.

...yeah... I might have the same reaction, especially if my boyfriend set it up. Sometimes, I want ALONE time with him on holidays, you know? On the other hand, I live with all my friends, so...

Eid's idea cracks me up.
