Anagrams on a train! An anagramatic map of Portland's light rail network.
That is TEH AWESOME!!!!!!!

That is so frickin' cool!

How's the AutoCAD coming, cutie?
posted by Specklet 27 February | 14:39
I wish I'd spent more time in Portland so I'd know what those stations actually were.

Autocad? I'm playing with sharpies!
posted by pieisexactlythree 27 February | 14:51
My friend and I were talking about how much my cat had destroyed his sock monkey toy, that it was a zombie Living Dead sock monkey, so I took a black sharpie and drew Xs over its little black eyes. Now I really do have a zombie sock monkey.

Here's the real map for comparison.

This shit has been all over boingboing for the past week or two, it seems like every other post is more "remixed" transit maps. I just want to use this opportunity to vent about HOW FUCKING SICK OF THESE I AM. The first one was imaginative and original. Once it becomes a meme, any further iterations are exponentially worse and more annoying. Like those remixed movie trailers and Brokeback Mountain parodies. I for one do NOT welcome our new "culture remixing" overlords. Get over yourselves and make something original if you want to express yourself.

OMG I want a zombie sock monkey!

1. Purchase sock monkey.
2. Acquire sharpie.
3. Draw Xs over monkey's eyes.
4. ???
5. PROFIT!!!

Sorry for the meme, kyle.

Ooh! It's Kyle G. I'm a real idiot, I've always read it as KY-leg. Anyway, what he said.
posted by danostuporstar 27 February | 16:16
Can I think it's cool if this is the first time I've seen it?
posted by mike9322 27 February | 16:46
You can think it's cool no matter what, of course. Perhaps kyleg was a little strong in the wording, I was just echoing "there have been a lot of these lately."

Just to put this in context, I live in Portland and ride this system. I met a lot of metachat people at the recent meetup, and thought this might provide some shits and giggles.

*wipes nostalgic tear from eye*

How I miss getting off at Trolley Aced Eve then 11 every day.

Thanks, pie! In addition to jonesing for my old PDX stomping grounds for the last few months, I've been spending much more time doing things in "meatspace" and have begun focusing my internet time around project driven activities. Had you not posted it here, I'd've likely missed this.

In some ways, I wish I had the time and patience to constantly be on the leading edge of the newest cool thing, but that's just not the case. If I were, I, too, would probably take the opportunity to vent about HOW FUCKING SICK I AM OF THESE. Because we all know that's never been done before. ;)

Yeah, I don't follow Boing Boing anymore so I hadn't seen this either. I guess this is just one of those things that's clever the first time you see it, and old hat after.
posted by matildaben 27 February | 18:03
I'd never seen it, and thought it was especially neat-o since I live in Portland. So neener neener neener.
posted by Specklet 27 February | 18:11
Also thought it was cool, pie, thanks for sharing. I definitely think the map is more interesting to people who've taken the MAX eleventy-three times.
posted by rebirtha 27 February | 21:42
don't worry, i don't hate you for sharing it, i just hate boing boing's obsession with it. but they still have a few good things a day so i haven't given up yet. i wish i could comment there and tell them to knock it the hell off, but i needed to vent.

honestly, i'm not cool or cutting edge. i promise.

The happy here can be kind of oppressive at times.

Not to worry, dano, I'm sure I'm not the only member of the 'Happy Nazi Squad' to have turned a majority their attention/energy elsewhere or to have completely moved on. Pretty soon, your oppression here will be nothing more than a distant and hazy memory. =D
posted by Frisbee Girl 28 February | 00:39
Aw, Friz! Please don't be disappearing on us... I'm always so happy when I get up in the morning, and you're getting home in the wee hours, and I see you posting around here. If anyone plays a late-late-night (US time) radio set, it's usually you and I listening... and it feels all cozy and nice.

When you're gone I'm usually on here pretty much by myself in the a.m., unless mightynez or essexjan or seanyboy, or one of the US insomniacs come 'round to play (I'm looking at you, mudpuppie).

Anyway, there are so many places on the web to be edgy, bitter, sarcastic, embattled, etc., I don't really see why anyone should feel oppressed that we don't do that much of it here.

We play music, we share music, we play games, we post silly or interesting pictures, we talk about ourselves and support each other... and, to me, a place that does this with a group of people that are bright, funny, sophisticated, diverse, playful, and open is fantastic. Anyone who thinks the tone is saccharine shouldn't be here, because they won't enjoy it... but they probably don't really "get" the sort of gently self-parodying nature of it all either, which is fine.

Absolutely nobody should be dragged kicking and screaming to metachat.

If the site takes a turn for the mean and abusive, I won't be here either. I have about 10 million better things to do with my time.

[Heh, and I poked my head in to see if bmarkey was maybe spinning tonight, too! And I really do like night on MeCha, it's like being at the library afterhours or something.]

Short of losing my internet connection, I can't imagine never poking my head in here again. And my comment wasn't meant as a complaint or an alarm; merely an observation.

I wholeheartedly respect peoples' rights and needs to be cranky, bitter and curmudgeonly, support it, even. It's the mix that makes things interesting and far be it from me to ask someone to be something that they're not. However, when it's insinuated, again, that there's this oppression because people make positive comments about something and give a good natured ribbing as they offer a different perspective, well hell, there you have it.

*shrugs*

I think that anyone who has met me in person can attest that I'm as genuinely good natured in real life as I am on line (though with a filthier mouth) and it's just not my style to be one way online and another way in person. I've tried to dial it down by posting less as things have become much busier in my personal life, but the fact is that I can't take the me out of me. Nor would I want to.

As I see it, the logical and gracious answer to helping ease this sense of oppression is to continue taking more of me elsewhere. The bright side is that everyone knows where to find me via my profile, the wiki or the talk feature on Gmail. (In fact, taz, right now I can see that your color is all green for go.)

All that said, I'm not offended, mad or even disenchanted, though a bit tired of rolling my eyes at being dubbed some sort of social fascist. Looking for a more productive and fulfilling balance to things just makes sense.

Anyway, there are so many places on the web to be edgy, bitter, sarcastic, embattled, etc., I don't really see why anyone should feel oppressed that we don't do that much of it here.

That's not really what I meant. It's just hard sometimes to talk frankly about the content of a link without some implication being drawn regarding the poster. This thread is a good example.

Neither kyleg nor I said anything negative about pie or his posting the link or about the commenters who enjoyed it. I don't think anything negative was even implied. I know I didn't mean to imply anything about anyone, and since kyleg's first comment was about BoingBoing and people who copy other's ideas ad nauseum I don't see any implications there either.

And yet everybody else seemed to react defenseively to our comments, and a couple went so far as to call us elitist.

Frisbee Girl, I am not talking about you personally, and certainly not dubbing you a "social fascist". I'm making a general observation (and probably not making it well) that the atmosphere here can -at times- make the free exchange of ideas -a little- imtimidating.

And taz, I love MetaChat and have stated so many times. I do not come here "kicking and screaming" and really not sure where that statement comes from.
posted by danostuporstar 28 February | 09:51
Exchange your ideas freely, just don't be an asshole here. There's a zillion other places you can be an asshole. It's nice to have one place that's free of all that.
posted by matildaben 28 February | 10:10
Ah, dano - well I didn't really think people were being defensive about boing-boing (and that would be weird), just that there are a lot of metachatters from Portland, so naturally it would be an item of interest here.

And I really wasn't talking about you with the kicking and screaming, and hope you don't you don't feel like you can't be critical of anything. Maybe it feels that way because the one thing that is basically enforced is that posters shouldn't complain about MeFi stuff here (unless for some reason discussion has been closed on MeTa, and it seems like there's a lot more to say), and they shouldn't gossip about MeFi members. That may seem a little restrictive sometimes, since we're all mostly mefites and involved with the site, but it's the only way to keep it from becoming a mefi-bitch-about site and be fair to everybody.

Some people have complained that mecha is too nice... and for them, I don't think it's a good fit. But there's no rule or expectation that metachatters always have to be uplifting and positive... you should always feel free to express your opinion. That's kind of the whole point.
