Can You Get To That? [More:] This song is funkier than 16 miles of chitlins, rocks like a sonuvabitch, and has great lyrics that resonate more for me with each passing year.
Easily one of my top ten favorite songs ever, easily. It is quietly, relentlessly funky. Ninja master all hiding up in the rafters for 17 hours holding in your pee waiting to drop down like 100 pounds of pigeon shit on a mothersucker funky. Immortal Illuminati Gnomes of Zurich hollow earth holy shit did a fine lady in a fur bikini just ride by on a Brontosaurus Funky.

Same here. It's right up there with 'Everday People,' 'Jungleland,' and 'Color Me Impressed.'

and of course, 'Surrender' and 'Tracks Of My Tears.'

I'd also add 'Da Doo Ron Ron' by the Crystals. Lately that song's been digging it's claws into me. Forget Dada art, it should be called Dadoo art. Seriously.

My favorite Sam Cook song is 'A Change is Gonna Come.'

This sounds creepy, but the one historical event I wish I was present for most is Sam Cooke's funeral in December 1964.

It was held at the Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Los Angeles; a crowd of 5,000, some of whom arrived five hours before the scheduled last rites, over-ran facilities designed to accommodate 1,500. In the deeply emotional atmosphere, supercharged by the rich-with-grief singing of Lou Rawls, Bobby Blue Bland and Arthur Lee Simpkins, women fainted, tears ran down men's cheeks and onlookers shouted. Gospel singer Bessy Griffin, who was to appear on the funeral program, became so grief-stricken she had to be carried off. Ray Charles stepped in from the audience to sing and play 'Angels Keep Watching Over Me'.

Oh, man.

also, 'Bristol Stomp' by the Dovells. That song just about defines the word 'relentless.'

and I know you two don't visit here on the weekends so here's a repost of three of the best rock and roll songs ever:

Good Golly, Miss Molly (If Little Richard was a new artist today, he'd still freak out the squares.

Yakety Yak. This is still the best teenage 'life sux,' lament of all time.

Drift Away No explanation neccessary, I imangine.

and of course Da Doo Ron Ron and Everyday People.

I have indeed had waaay too much caffeine today.

Also:

Anyday - Derek & the Dominos (proof positive that Clapton was once something more than a hack, to put it mildly)

Kick Out The Jams - MC5: 'the wigglin' guitars girl, the crash of the drums, if you wanna keep a-rockin' till mornin' comes, LET ME BE WHO I AM! AND LET ME KICK OUT THE JAMS!'

Kinda says it all.

And just like that river, I've been running every since.

(it's the every part that seals the deal for me.)

A quick glance at my itunes reveals toothchipper versions of this song by Solomon Burke, Bobby Womack and Al Greene as well. I love this song.

I am now going to reveal just how confident I am in my coolness/dorkiness by admitting that when I was watching American Idol the other day, the white dude with the premature gray hair sang this and he became my favorite to not have a chance of winning because he's actually got a personality and likes good music. He also did a pretty good Joe Cocker channeling hand slapping body spazz that was great.

Rock it out, jon. You're making me smile all the day long (because its easier to smile than to throw desks).

Keep my toe a'tapping, mixmaster mc!

Lemme see what other YSI's are still active. I went nuts this weekend.

Bobby Marchan - There Is Something On Your Mind (the gayest R&B song of all time, and I mean that in a good way)

Toots & the Maytals - Pressure Drop Best. Reggae. Ever.

Mountain - Mississippi Queen Precisely the right amount of cowbell, for once.

Power Puffs - You Can't Take My Boyfriend's Woody Best Double Entendre in Surf Music History, if not the entire 1960's.

Two Dollar Questions - Aunt Matilda's Double Yummy Blow Your Mind Out Brownies Beggars description, but once you listen, it makes perfect sense for this place.
